King James wording
King James Version
So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.THE KEY
“Abode” carries the image of sitting down and settling; here, the length of the days is the length of that settled presence.
THE MEANING
A set-apart place can still be where you remain for many days. Your time gathers in the place where you dwell, and the length of the stay becomes plain.
THE ROOT
יְשַׁבְתֶּם
yashavtem
GROWS FROM
י־ש־ב
sit, dwell, remain
יָשַׁב (yashav) carries both sitting and dwelling, so “abode” pictures settled presence. Its branches include מוֹשָׁב (moshav, a dwelling place or seat) and יוֹשֵׁב (yoshev, an inhabitant): a stay and the one who stays grow from the same root.
ALSO GROWS
moshav: dwelling place, seat
מוֹשָׁב
The place itself can be understood as the settled space where someone sits or dwells.
yoshev: one who dwells, an inhabitant
יוֹשֵׁב
The root connects the act of remaining with the person whose life is present in that place.
קָדֵשׁ
qadesh
GROWS FROM
ק־ד־ש
set apart
The place-name Kadesh comes from קָדַשׁ (qadash), the root of being set apart. That name adds another layer to the scene: the place is marked apart, while the sentence measures the length of the stay there.
ALSO GROWS
qadosh: set apart
קָדוֹשׁ
This branch carries the root’s sense of being distinguished or set apart into a description.
qodesh: set-apartness, that which is set apart
קֹדֶשׁ
The place-name shares its root with the word for set-apartness, so Kadesh carries meaning beyond a map label.
THE PATTERN
Abiding turns a location or relationship into the setting in which life unfolds.
Abram settled in the land of Canaan, and Lot settled in the cities of the round plain, and pitched his tent as far as Sodom. And my people will settle in a dwelling of wholeness, and in tents of leaning, and in resting places at ease.Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it stays in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.THE THREAD
Abram settled in the land of Canaan, and Lot settled in the cities of the round plain, and pitched his tent as far as Sodom.Genesis uses the same י־ש־ב (y-sh-b) root for both Abram dwelling in Canaan and Lot dwelling among the cities of the plain. The verb names settled presence in either place; the place itself gives the dwelling its particular shape.
