King James wording
King James Version
Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD’s thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.THE KEY
“Heaven of heavens” reaches the highest imaginable realm, then “all that therein is” closes the last gap: nothing in creation stands outside the LORD’s belonging.
THE MEANING
Your world is already within the LORD your God’s domain: the highest heavens, the earth, and everything in it belong to him. Nothing in creation sits beyond that encompassing relation.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that the divine belongs only to a spiritual realm while the material world lies outside it.
THE ROOT
כֹּל
kol
GROWS FROM
כ־ל־ל
K-L-L
To make whole or complete; by extension, the whole or entirety.
The Hebrew kol gathers everything into one whole. Here, “all that therein is” makes the earth’s belonging comprehensive: no part of it is left outside the verse’s scope.
ALSO GROWS
kalal: To complete, make whole
כָּלַל
This verb carries the sense of bringing something into its entirety, echoing the verse’s reach over the whole created order.
kalil: Complete, entire; wholly
כָּלִיל
This branch makes the same whole-or-entire sense explicit, illuminating the breadth of “all” in the verse.
THE PATTERN
The whole created order, including its fullness and inhabitants, belongs within the LORD’s domain.
A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD's, and what fills it; the inhabited world, and those who settle in it.The heavens, even the heavens, are the LORD's; but the earth he gives to the children of humankind. For the earth is the Lord's, and what fills it.THE THREAD
A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD's, and what fills it; the inhabited world, and those who settle in it.Psalm 24:1 names the earth’s fullness and its inhabitants as belonging to the LORD; Deuteronomy places the heavens, the earth, and everything within it under the same belonging. Together, they leave no created realm outside the verse’s scope.
