King James wording
King James Version
And what he did unto you in the wilderness, until ye came into this place;THE KEY
The place you arrive at is standing ground, and what was done for you in the wilderness belongs to how you stand there now.
THE MEANING
Your present ground is not separate from what is done for you along the wilderness way. The verse holds the exposed stretch and the place you occupy inside one continuous movement, so arrival carries the memory of the path.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that reaching a settled place makes the wilderness irrelevant; the verse carries the wilderness into the account of arrival.
THE ROOT
מָקוֹם
maqom
GROWS FROM
קום
Rise, stand, or be established.
The word for “place” grows from the root for standing or rising. The place you reach is more than a destination: it is ground on which you stand, still joined to the path that brought you there.
ALSO GROWS
qum: Rise or stand.
קוּם
This is the root beneath “place,” bringing the sense of standing into the verse’s image of arrival.
heqim: Raise up or establish.
הֵקִים
This branch carries the sense of being set upright or made firm, deepening “this place” as ground where you can stand.
maqom: Place; a standing place.
מָקוֹם
The verse’s destination carries the root’s sense of standing, so the wilderness and arrival remain linked.
THE PATTERN
The wilderness is not an empty gap before arrival; divine action and guidance continue along the way.
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to shine for them; to go by day and night. He leads them along the straight way, so that they go to a city to settle in.where your fathers tested me in the assay, and saw my works forty years.THE THREAD
And he said, Do not draw near here. Loosen the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is set-apart ground. Both verses use maqom (מָקוֹם), “place,” from qum (קום), “stand” or “rise.” Deuteronomy names the place reached after the wilderness; Exodus reveals that the ground where you stand can also hold an encounter.
