This verse in the King James

King James wording
Only ye shall not eat the blood; ye shall pour it upon the earth as water.

The blood is kept outside the meal and poured onto the ground, where the next verse names it as life.

Blood remains distinct from the flesh: it is not eaten but poured onto the earth like water. The verse makes that boundary visible in the handling of what the next verse calls life.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that whatever comes from food belongs in the meal; blood remains set apart from the flesh.

תִּשְׁפְּכֶנּוּ

tishpekhennu

GROWS FROM

שׁפך

To pour out or spill; with blood as its object, the same root can describe blood being shed.

“pour” in this verse is tishpekhennu. The verb makes the boundary physical: blood moves out of the meal and onto the ground. Elsewhere this root describes blood being shed, giving the pouring a weight that the English word can obscure.

ALSO GROWS

shefikhah: Pouring or spilling

שְׁפִיכָה

This noun carries the same action into a name for the act itself: the blood is deliberately poured out.

yishafech: Shall be shed

יִשָּׁפֵךְ

Genesis 9:6 uses this form for bloodshed, showing that the same root can describe blood poured out in a commanded act or shed through violence.

Life carried in blood is kept outside ordinary food, and its handling marks that boundary.

But flesh in its living soul, its blood, you shall not eat.
Genesis 9:4 · SDVThe verse directly links blood with life and sets it apart from flesh as food.
And any man of the children of Israel, or of the sojourners among you, who hunts and catches any beast or bird that may be eaten, he shall pour out its blood, and cover it with dust.
Leviticus 17:13 · SDVThe blood is poured out and covered rather than included in the meal.
But that we write to them to hold off from the stains of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
Acts 15:20 · SDVThe boundary around consuming blood appears again as a direct instruction.
Only hold fast, that you do not eat the blood, for the blood is the living soul, and you may not eat the living soul with the flesh.
Deuteronomy 12:23 · SDV

The next verse names the reason beneath the pouring: blood is life, and life is not eaten with the flesh. The groundward pouring makes that boundary visible.
