This verse in the King James

King James wording
Ye shall not do so unto the LORD your God.

Changing the recipient does not change the nature of the act.

Your approach to God is not made fitting by changing only the recipient. The verse draws a boundary around acts whose form belongs to devotion to other gods; what is done still carries the character of its pattern.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that an act becomes acceptable to the LORD simply because it is redirected toward him.

תַעֲשׂוּן

taʿasun

GROWS FROM

ע־שׂ־ה

ʿ-s-h

Do, make, carry out.

“do” in this verse is taʿasun. The Hebrew verb reaches beyond intention to what is actually done or made. Its family includes words for deed and action, so the verse draws its boundary around the act itself: changing who receives it does not erase what the act is.

ALSO GROWS

maʿaseh: Deed, work

מַעֲשֶׂה

This branch names the concrete work or deed, underscoring that the verse addresses enacted practice.

ʿasiyyah: Action, doing

עֲשִׂיָּה

This branch keeps the focus on what is carried out; the recipient alone does not redefine the action.

The object of devotion does not erase the moral character of the practice used to approach it.

Do not give any of your seed to pass through the fire to Molech, and do not pierce the nature of your God. I am the LORD.
Leviticus 18:21 · SDVThe verse joins the violent practice to profaning God’s name, showing that what is done carries meaning for the one it claims to honor.
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot share in the Lord's table and the table of demons.
1 Corinthians 10:21 · SDVThe cups and tables cannot be treated as interchangeable, because the practice remains bound to the object of devotion.
God is breath, and those who bow down to him must bow before him in breath and in truth.
John 4:24 · SDVThe way of worship is joined to the nature of God; the act of bowing down is not detached from what God is.
You shall not do so to the LORD your God, for every recoiling thing to the LORD, which he hates, they have done to their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burned in the fire to their gods.
Deuteronomy 12:31 · SDV

The next verse names what “so” includes: acts done to other gods, including burning sons and daughters in the fire. That makes the boundary in this verse concrete and severe.
