King James wording
King James Version
The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;THE KEY
The prophet rises from within the people, and the word for hearing already carries the response it awakens.
THE MEANING
God raises a prophet from among your own people, in the likeness of Moses, and the voice reaches you as a call to hear and respond. The verse places guidance within human kinship, close enough to address you directly.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that divine guidance must come only from a distant or alien source.
THE ROOT
תִּשְׁמְעוּן
tishme'un from shamaʿ
GROWS FROM
שמע
sh-m-ʿ
To hear or listen; where a voice calls for response, to hear and respond.
“hear and respond” in this verse is tishme'un from shamaʿ. The word holds listening and response together. The verse describes more than sound reaching the ear: the prophet’s words call for an answer.
ALSO GROWS
shemaʿ: Hear; hear and respond.
שְׁמַע
The same root makes hearing an active reception of a voice, as in the summons addressed to Israel.
shemuʿah: A report or heard message.
שְׁמוּעָה
A message is something received by hearing; here, the prophet’s voice is the message that reaches the people.
shomeaʿ: One who hears; a hearer.
שֹׁמֵעַ
The root names both the act of hearing and the person who receives the voice.
קֶרֶב
qerev
GROWS FROM
קרב
q-r-b
To approach or draw near; the inner part, or what is near.
The prophet comes from the people’s own midst: the language of inwardness belongs to a family of nearness. Guidance here is close to the people it addresses.
ALSO GROWS
qarov: Near.
קָרוֹב
The prophet’s origin among the people makes the voice near, rather than removed from their life.
korban: A drawing near.
קָרְבָּן
The same consonants carry the idea of approach, echoing the nearness of a voice raised from within the community.
יָקִים
yaqim
GROWS FROM
קום
q-w-m
To stand or rise; in this form, to raise or establish.
“raises up” in this verse is yaqim. The prophet is someone God causes to stand among the people. The root links rising with being established, giving the voice a visible, embodied presence.
ALSO GROWS
qum: Rise or stand.
קוּם
The prophet’s appearance is expressed as someone being brought to stand.
heqim: Set up or establish.
הֵקִים
The same root can describe establishing someone, adding the sense that this voice has a place among the people.
maqom: Place or location.
מָקוֹם
This branch connects standing with having a place, fitting the prophet’s placement within the people’s midst.
THE PATTERN
A voice is truly heard when listening becomes response.
Bend your ear and come to me. Hear and respond, and your living soul shall live. I will cut a covenant of the ages with you, the steady faithful loves of David. My sheep hear and respond to my voice, and I perceive them, and they follow me.But be makers of the word, and not hearers only, miscounting yourselves.THE THREAD
Hear and respond, O Israel. The LORD our God is one LORD.“Hear” here is the same שמע (sh-m-ʿ, shamaʿ) root as “hearken” in Deuteronomy 18:15. The call to hear Israel’s confession and the call to hear the prophet share a word that gathers listening and response into one.
