King James wording
King James Version
But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:THE KEY
The Hebrew says the blow strikes a נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh, a living soul), placing a person’s life at the center of the violence.
THE MEANING
Lethal violence takes shape as a chain: hatred becomes concealed planning, then a rise against a neighbor, then a blow that ends a life. Flight afterward follows the killing; the verse has already named the intent in the hatred and ambush that precede it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that reaching a refuge after a killing erases the intention already shown by hatred and ambush.
THE ROOT
נֶפֶשׁ
nephesh
GROWS FROM
נפש
Living soul, person, or life.
The Hebrew expression uses נֶפֶשׁ where English says “mortally,” placing the living person at the center of the blow. The sentence traces the attack to the death of a person, not just to an abstract legal outcome.
ALSO GROWS
nafsho: His life or self.
נַפְשׁוֹ
The same word can name the life of the person this attack takes.
nefashot: Living souls or persons.
נְפָשׁוֹת
The plural keeps נֶפֶשׁ concrete: it names people and lives.
וְאָרַב
ve'arav
GROWS FROM
ארב
Lie in wait; ambush.
“lies in wait” in this verse is ve'arav. This root makes the waiting part of the attack: the violence is arranged under concealment before the attacker rises. It reveals a prepared strike, not a sudden blow.
ALSO GROWS
ma'arav: Ambush.
מַאֲרָב
It names the concealed attack already present in the verse’s “lie in wait.”
orev: One who lies in wait.
אוֹרֵב
It names the attacker by the hidden posture that precedes the violence.
וְקָם
veqam
GROWS FROM
קום
Stand or rise.
“rises up” in this verse is veqam. The attacker moves from concealment to standing against his neighbor; the rising is the hinge between the hidden plan and the blow. This root gives the violence a visible point of action.
ALSO GROWS
maqom: Place.
מָקוֹם
This word comes from the same root, carrying the sense of a place where one stands.
heqim: Set up or establish.
הֵקִים
The causative form shows the root’s movement from rising to making something stand.
THE PATTERN
Lethal violence is already taking shape when hatred becomes a concealed intention, before the fatal blow.
And Cain said to Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.Do not lie in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the aligned one; do not ravage his lying place.Everyone who hates his brother is a human-slayer. And you know that no human-slayer has the life of the ages remaining in him.THE THREAD
And Cain said to Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.Deuteronomy’s וְקָם (veqam, “and he rises”) and Genesis’s וַיָּקָם (vayyaqom, “he rose up”) come from קום (qum, “to stand, rise”). Both place the rise against a brother or neighbor immediately before a killing, making it the hinge between hostility and lethal action.
