This verse in the King James

King James wording
And to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the LORD thy God, as he hath spoken.

The height God gives becomes ⁨שֵׁם⁩ (shem, name as nature): a public identity shaped by belonging to God.

God raises you into distinction among peoples, giving you honor and a name you do not have to manufacture. That name is a nature made visible, centered in belonging to the LORD as a set-apart people.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This dissolves the belief that you must manufacture distinction or earn a lasting name. Here, height and honor are given by God and held within belonging to him.

עֶלְיוֹן

ʿelyon

GROWS FROM

עָלָה

ʿ-l-h

to rise, go up, ascend

“set you uppermost” in this verse is ʿelyon. The root describes movement upward, and the same seed appears in words for ascent and for an offering that goes up. Here, the people do not climb into status on their own: God makes them high, and that elevation is joined to praise, honor, and belonging to him.

ALSO GROWS

ʿaliyah: ascent; going up

עֲלִיָּה

It makes the movement inside “high” visible: elevation is something that happens, not a status the people manufacture.

ʿolah: burnt offering; that which goes up

עֹלָה

It echoes the verse’s upward language while placing it in a context of devotion.

maʿalah: ascent; step

מַעֲלָה

It shows that the root can describe a rise or a higher position, while this verse names God as the one who raises.

קָדוֹשׁ

qadosh

GROWS FROM

קָדַשׁ

q-d-sh

to set apart; to consecrate

“set-apart” in this verse is qadosh. The word names distinction through belonging: the people are set apart unto the LORD. Its branches connect that distinction to sacred space and consecration, so being “high” is bound to a relationship, not just a rank.

ALSO GROWS

qodesh: set-apartness; sacredness

קֹדֶשׁ

It names the distinct quality that marks the people as belonging to God.

miqdash: sanctuary; set-apart place

מִקְדָּשׁ

It shows the root’s connection to a place set apart for God’s presence.

qiddesh: set apart; consecrate

קִדֵּשׁ

It carries the root as an action, illuminating the verse’s description of a people made distinct.

תְּהִלָּה

tehillah

GROWS FROM

הָלַל

h-l-l

to praise; to boast

The phrase “for praise” names what the people’s elevation expresses: praise carried in public, alongside their name and honor. The root also forms words for songs of praise and praise to the LORD, making praise a shared expression rather than a private trophy.

ALSO GROWS

hallelu-yah: praise Yah

הַלְלוּיָהּ

It makes explicit the direction of praise that the verse places beside the people’s elevated name.

tehillim: praises; Psalms

תְּהִלִּים

It shows praise taking the form of a people’s voiced expression.

hit'hallēl: to boast; to glory

הִתְהַלֵּל

It connects praise with what a person or people publicly takes pride in.

God forms a people as set apart to himself, so their distinct life becomes a public expression of his praise.

And you shall be to me a governance of priests and a set-apart nation. These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.
Exodus 19:6 · SDVThe people’s distinct identity is expressed as belonging to God and being a holy nation.
This people I have shaped for myself; they shall recount my praise.
Isaiah 43:21 · SDVGod forms a people for himself, and their life becomes an expression of his praise.
But you are a chosen lineage, a royal priesthood, a set-apart nation, a people made his own, so that you may tell out the excellences of the one who called you out of darkness into his wondrous light.
1 Peter 2:9 · SDVA set-apart people show forth the praise of the one to whom they belong.
For you are a set-apart people unto the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people of his own treasure, above all the peoples who are upon the face of the ground.
Deuteronomy 7:6 · SDV

Both verses use ⁨קָדוֹשׁ⁩ (qadosh, set apart) for a people whose distinction is unto the LORD. Deuteronomy 7:6 makes the link explicit: being made special and raised above others belongs to being chosen for God, so elevation reads as received identity.
