King James wording
King James Version
And the priest shall take the basket out of thine hand, and set it down before the altar of the LORD thy God.THE KEY
What leaves your hand does not disappear; it is set down before God.
THE MEANING
The priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it before the altar of the LORD your God. What you have carried becomes something placed in God’s presence, where it can rest.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that releasing something from your hand means losing it: the basket is given a place before the altar.
THE ROOT
וְהִנִּיחוֹ
ve-hinnicho
GROWS FROM
נוּחַ
n-w-ḥ
to rest, settle, or come to rest
“sets it down” in this verse is ve-hinnicho. The verb carries the sense of causing something to rest: the priest does more than move the basket; he places it into rest before the altar. The same root describes the ark coming to rest after the flood, joining this act of placement to a movement from upheaval toward settled ground.
ALSO GROWS
menuchah: rest or resting place
מְנוּחָה
This noun makes visible what the basket receives here: a place where what was carried can settle.
vat-tanach: and it rested
וַתָּנַח
This form describes the ark resting on the mountains of Ararat, echoing the basket’s movement from someone’s hand to a place of rest.
THE PATTERN
What is carried or borne is brought to a place where it can rest and be held.
And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. And Moses said to Aaron, Take a jar, and put an omer full of manna in it, and set it down before the LORD, to be guarded for your generations.Come to me, all you who toil and have been loaded down, and I will give you rest.THE THREAD
And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. The verb translated “set it down” comes from nuach, the same root used here for the ark that “rested” on Ararat. In Deuteronomy the basket comes to rest before the altar; in Genesis the ark comes to rest on solid ground after the waters recede.
