King James Version
And Moses charged the people the same day, saying,THE KEY
A “charge” and a “commandment” grow from the same Hebrew root, so the people are gathered into instruction as it is spoken.
THE MEANING
You stand among the people receiving this spoken instruction now. The address gathers the whole community into a shared hearing on that very day.
THE ROOT
וַיְצַו

GROWS FROM
צוה
tsavah
to command, direct, or charge
The verb translated “charged” shares its root with מִצְוָה (mitzvah, commandment), joining the spoken charge to the instruction itself. The word places the people together under a shared address, spoken on that day.
ALSO GROWS
mitzvah: A commandment or directive.
מִצְוָה
It shares the root צוה with “charged,” connecting Moses’ spoken address to the instruction it carries.
tsav: A command or precept.
צַו
This shorter form shows the same root at work in a direct command.
THE PATTERN
A spoken charge gathers a whole people around instruction they can hear together.
Assemble the people, the men, the women, and the little ones, and the sojourner within your gates, so that they may hear and respond, and so that they may learn, and be struck with awe of the LORD your God, and guard to do all the words of this instruction; And he called aloud from it before the wide place that was before the gate of the waters, from first light until the middle of the day, facing the men and the women, and those who could tell the difference, and the ears of all the people were turned toward the book of the instruction. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and said to them, Men of Judaea, and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and lend your ear to my words.THE THREAD
And these words, which I command you this day, shall be in your heart.“Command” here comes from the same root, צוה (tsavah), as “charged” in Deuteronomy 27:11. The words spoken to the people are also to be received within the heart, joining shared hearing with inward keeping.
