This verse in the King James

King James wording
And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.

The curse seals both directions of life: heaven will not release rain, and earth will not yield fruit.

You stand beneath a sky that will not release rain and upon ground that will not yield; both directions of provision have hardened. This is complete barrenness: nothing comes down, and nothing rises.

שָׁמַיִם

shamayim

GROWS FROM

מים

⁨מַיִם⁩ (mayim) means “waters”; its consonants appear at the end of ⁨שָׁמַיִם⁩ (shamayim), “heavens.”

The written word for “heavens” visibly carries ⁨מַיִם⁩ (mayim, “waters”) within it. This sound-shape echo makes the bronze sky more than distant scenery: the water-bearing expanse itself is hardened shut.

ALSO GROWS

mayim: waters

מַיִם

These consonants name the waters that rain from the sky.

shamayim: heavens

שָׁמַיִם

The word shares the consonant sequence ⁨מ־י־ם⁩ with mayim; this is an echo in the written form, not proof of a historical derivation.

רֹאשׁ

rosh

GROWS FROM

ראש

Head, top, or chief.

The heavens are placed over your rosh, your head or top, while iron lies beneath you. The image leaves no responsive direction around you: above and below are both hardened.

ALSO GROWS

rosh: head, top

רֹאשׁ

It names the point directly over which the heavens become bronze.

reshit: beginning, first

רֵאשִׁית

This related form carries the sense of what is first or at the head, extending rosh beyond a body part.

rosh: chief, leader

רֹאשׁ

The same word can name a chief or head, linking the bodily head with a position of primacy.

When heaven withholds its water and earth cannot answer with fruit, the whole field of life enters barrenness.

And I will break the swelling of your strength, and I will make your heavens like iron, and your earth like bronze.
Leviticus 26:19 · SDVThe same image makes the sky and ground hard, with the metals reversed.
Therefore the heavens over you have held back from dew, and the earth has held back from her yield.
Haggai 1:10 · SDVHeaven’s withheld dew and earth’s withheld fruit show the two-sided barrenness in this verse.
But in truth I tell you, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut for three years and six months, when a great hunger came across all the land.
Luke 4:25 · SDVA shut heaven becomes famine across the land, showing how the closure above reaches life below.
In that day, I will answer, says the LORD. I will respond to the heavens, and they will answer the earth.
Hosea 2:21 · SDV

Here the heavens and earth hear one another instead of remaining sealed. Their response reveals what the image in Deuteronomy lacks: an answering movement between what comes from above and what grows below.
