King James wording
King James Version
And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee.THE KEY
Joshua’s name carries YHWH’s deliverance, and the charge to lead is held inside the promise of presence.
THE MEANING
The charge before you reaches beyond your own capacity, yet its center is not self-generated strength: the One who sends you is with you. Courage stands alongside the work of bringing others into the place promised to them.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that a calling rests on your strength alone.
THE ROOT
יְהוֹשֻׁעַ
Yehoshua
GROWS FROM
ישע
yasha
Deliver, rescue, bring into safety.
“Joshua” in this verse is Yehoshua. Yehoshua carries the sense “YHWH delivers,” so the name itself holds the nature of the mission. The final promise, “I will be with thee,” locates the ground of that deliverance in presence.
ALSO GROWS
yasha: Deliver, rescue.
יָשַׁע
This verb names the work carried in Joshua’s name and echoed in the charge to lead.
yeshuah: Deliverance.
יְשׁוּעָה
This noun names the outcome held inside the deliverance root that shapes the leader’s name.
חֲזַק
chazaq
GROWS FROM
חזק
chazaq
Become firm or strong; in another form, strengthen or fortify.
“Hold fast” in this verse is chazaq. The word reaches beyond a feeling of confidence: its root also carries firmness and strengthening. The charge names a steadiness suited to carrying others through the task.
ALSO GROWS
chazaq: Become strong, firm, or prevail.
חָזַק
This form shows strength as firmness that holds through pressure.
chizzeq: Strengthen or fortify.
חִזֵּק
This form shows the same root acting to make someone or something strong.
וֶאֱמָץ
ve’emats
GROWS FROM
אמץ
amats
Be firm or resolute; strengthen.
“be firm” in this verse is ve’emats. The word translated “courage” is a call to be resolute, paired with the call to be strong. Its root can also describe strengthening received, so resolve is held together with support.
ALSO GROWS
emats: Be resolute or courageous.
אֱמָץ
This form makes courage a steadiness within the charge, not a separate achievement.
immatzti-kha: I strengthened you.
אִמַּצְתִּיךָ
Isaiah 41:10 uses this root for God’s strengthening, linking resolve with support received.
THE PATTERN
A daunting charge comes with the promise of presence that strengthens and accompanies the one who carries it.
Hold fast and be firm. Do not fear, and do not quake before them. For the LORD your God is the one who walks with you. He will not release you, nor leave you.Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not look about in dismay, for I am your God. I will grip you, and I will help you, and I will hold you up with the right hand of my alignment.Let your way of living be without the love of silver, and let what is at hand be enough, for he has said, I will never let go of you, nor leave you behind.THE THREAD
Did I not command you? Hold fast and be firm. Do not tremble, and do not be shattered, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.Joshua 1:9 repeats the Hebrew roots חזק (chazaq, be strong) and אמץ (amats, be resolute) from this charge, then extends the promise of presence wherever Joshua goes. The repeated roots show courage held together with that presence, rather than standing alone as a qualification.
