This verse in the King James

King James wording
The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said.

The verse repeats “go over before thee” for both the LORD and Joshua, so the crossing is already led from ahead before you enter it.

The LORD your God goes ahead of you, destroys the nations before you, and you take possession of them; Joshua goes ahead of you too, as the LORD has spoken. The promise names both the violence of conquest and the one who leads you into it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

You have to be the first one into the threatened place, with no one ahead of you.

יַעֲבֹר

ya'avor

GROWS FROM

ע־ב־ר

ʿ-b-r

To cross, pass over, or pass through.

“crosses over” in this verse is ya'avor. The same verb describes the LORD going ahead and Joshua going ahead: the verse presents their leadership as movement through the crossing itself. Other branches of the root name the passage and the far side, drawing the threat and the way through it into one word family.

ALSO GROWS

ma'avar: Crossing, passage.

מַעֲבָר

The root can name the passage as well as the act of crossing, echoing the movement through contested ground.

ever: The other side, beyond.

עֵבֶר

The crossing leads toward an “other side”; the repeated verb places the LORD and Joshua ahead on that passage.

יְהוֹשֻׁעַ

Yehoshua

GROWS FROM

י־ש־ע

y-sh-ʿ

To deliver, rescue, or bring to safety; in the name Yehoshua, “YHWH delivers.”

Joshua’s name carries the root of deliverance, so the one who goes ahead bears a name that declares who delivers. The verse places that name beside the LORD’s own promise, joining the leader’s nature to the deliverance being spoken.

ALSO GROWS

Yeshua: Deliverance; also a name meaning “YHWH delivers.”

יֵשׁוּעַ

Yeshua shares Joshua’s root, making the name’s deliverance sense audible across both forms.

moshia: One who delivers or rescues.

מוֹשִׁיעַ

This branch names a deliverer, illuminating Joshua’s role as the one who goes ahead under the LORD’s spoken promise.

The one who leads goes ahead through the passage, and others follow the way opened before them.

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to shine for them; to go by day and night.
Exodus 13:21 · SDVThe LORD goes ahead of the people and leads them through the way before them.
And Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, Lift the ark of the covenant, and cross over before the people. And they lifted the ark of the covenant, and walked before the people.
Joshua 3:6 · SDVJoshua and the ark go ahead as the people cross after them.
When he drives out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they perceive his voice.
John 10:4 · SDVThe shepherd goes ahead, and those who belong to him follow his voice.
Perceive therefore this day that the LORD your God is the one crossing over before you, a fire that eats. He will destroy them and bring them low before you. So you will drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the LORD has said to you.
Deuteronomy 9:3 · SDV

The same Hebrew verb for crossing ahead appears here: the LORD goes over before you. This verse makes the conquest’s violence explicit and shows the people acting after the LORD has gone ahead.
