King James wording
King James Version
Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;THE KEY
The verse locates remembrance at the edge of change: while delight is still available, the Creator is held in view.
THE MEANING
The Creator is present in the season you are living now, while delight still belongs to your days. The verse names the change ahead without softening it: years can come when you say there is no pleasure in them. Remembrance speaks into the present because the seasons do not stay the same.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The assumption that today’s capacity for delight will remain unchanged, so the Creator can be remembered later. The verse places remembrance within the present season, before that change comes.
THE ROOT
וּזְכֹר
u-zekhor
GROWS FROM
זכר
Remember, call to mind, mention.
English can make “remember” sound like private mental retrieval. This root also gives words for remembrance and memorial: remembering brings what matters into present attention, holding the Creator in view within the life now unfolding.
ALSO GROWS
zikaron: Remembrance, memorial.
זִכָּרוֹן
A memorial keeps the remembered matter present beyond a passing thought.
zeker: Remembrance, mention, renown.
זֵכֶר
Remembering is linked with naming and speaking of what remains significant.
בּוֹרְאֶיךָ
bore’eka
GROWS FROM
ברא
Create, bring into being.
“the one who created you” in this verse is bore’eka. The word names the Creator through the act of bringing into being. Remembering is therefore oriented toward the source of the life you are living, not merely toward a title.
ALSO GROWS
beri’ah: Creation.
בְּרִיאָה
This branch names what is brought into being and makes the Creator–creation relation visible in the verse.
nivra: Was created; one who is created.
נִבְרָא
It names the created one in relation to the act expressed by “Creator.”
חֵפֶץ
ḥēfeṣ
GROWS FROM
חפץ
Desire, take pleasure in, delight.
The word for pleasure belongs to the language of desire and delight, so the verse speaks of more than difficult circumstances: it names a season when delight itself may recede. Its urgency rests on a real change in the capacity to enjoy the days.
ALSO GROWS
ḥāfēṣ: To desire, take pleasure in.
חָפֵץ
The verbal form makes clear that pleasure is an experience of desire and delight.
ḥēfeṣ: Pleasure, desire, purpose, matter.
חֵפֶץ
The noun can name both delight and what a person desires, deepening the force of “no pleasure in them.”
THE PATTERN
Remembering brings life’s source into present awareness as time and circumstances change.
But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to make strength, so that he may raise up his covenant, which he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.So show us how to count our days, that we may come into a heart of wisdom. But the One who comes alongside, the Set-Apart Breath, which the Father will send in my nature, that one will teach you all things and will remind you of all that I said to you.THE THREAD
And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark, and God caused a breath to cross over the earth, and the waters settled. The same זכר root names God’s remembering of Noah, followed by the waters subsiding. Ecclesiastes uses that root for the reader’s remembering of the Creator, placing the same word at the heart of life as its conditions change.
