King James wording
King James Version
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;THE KEY
The Hebrew for “be born” also carries “give birth,” so life’s arrival holds both the one who comes forth and the bringing forth itself.
THE MEANING
Your life moves through arrivals and endings, just as the ground moves through planting and removal. The verse holds these moments within time, with no single season describing the whole of life.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
An ending does not by itself mean that life has failed; death and uprooting appear beside birth and planting as parts of the same passage.
THE ROOT
לָלֶדֶת
laledet
GROWS FROM
ילד
Give birth, beget, bring forth
“bear” in this verse is laledet. The Hebrew verb can describe both being born and giving birth, holding the arrival and the act that brings it forth in one word-family. Its branches extend from a child to generations, so birth carries the beginning of a lineage within it.
ALSO GROWS
yeled: Child
יֶלֶד
The one who is born is already present in the root’s word-family.
toledot: Generations, descendants
תּוֹלְדוֹת
Birth opens into the generations that follow, making this moment part of a continuing line.
לָטַעַת
lata’at
GROWS FROM
נטע
Plant, set in the ground
“what is planted” in this verse is lata’at. The verse follows planting with the phrase “that which is planted”: Hebrew uses the same root for the action and the planted state. The paired images trace something from being set into the ground to being lifted out of it.
ALSO GROWS
natua: Planted
נָטוּעַ
This form appears in the verse itself and names the thing that may later be plucked up.
mattaʿ: Planting, plantation
מַטָּע
The same root can name a planting as a place or result, extending the image beyond the act of putting a seed in the ground.
THE PATTERN
Life unfolds through recurring seasons of emergence, growth, ending, and renewal.
All the days of the earth, sowing and reaping, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not stop. You send out your breath, and they are created; you renew the face of the ground. The soil bears fruit by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.THE THREAD
Truly, truly, I say to you. Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit. Here a seed’s death is joined to the fruit that follows, opening the pairing of planting and dying in Ecclesiastes. The images share a life-cycle, while each verse holds its own distinct meaning.
