This verse in the King James

King James wording
Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?

The Hebrew says warmth is “for them”, a shared bodily condition that one person cannot create alone.

The verse puts companionship in the body: two people lying close can warm one another, while solitude lacks the warmth their nearness makes possible. Its question holds the need for another as a physical truth, not a failure of character.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the idea that every human need should be met by solitary self-sufficiency: this warmth is described as something shared.

וְחַם

ve-ḥam

GROWS FROM

חמם

To become hot or warm.

“are warm” in this verse is ve-ḥam. The Hebrew forms come from ⁨חמם⁩, “to become hot or warm.” The related ⁨חֹם⁩ (ḥom, heat) names the same quality in “the heat of the day,” and ⁨חַמָּה⁩ (ḥammāh, the sun) extends it to the sun’s heat. Here warmth is bodily and shared: one person’s presence changes what the other can feel.

ALSO GROWS

ḥom: Heat, as in the heat of the day.

חֹם

This is the same root’s heat in the world around the body; Ecclesiastes describes warmth shared between bodies.

ḥammāh: The sun, associated with its heat.

חַמָּה

The root reaches from warmth between people to the sun’s warmth, joining intimate and environmental heat.

Shared presence gives warmth, strength, or life that solitude cannot supply in the same way.

Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the face of his friend.
Proverbs 27:17 · SDVOne person’s presence changes and sharpens another, just as shared bodies create warmth.
And they said to one another, Was not our heart burning within us as he spoke with us on the road, and as he threw open the writings to us?
Luke 24:32 · SDVIn company and conversation, their hearts burn with a warmth they recognize together.
And the LORD was seen by him in the oaks of Mamre, and he settled in the tent opening in the heat of the day.
Genesis 18:1 · SDV

“Warm” here and “heat” in Genesis come from forms of ⁨חמם⁩ (ḥ-m-m), the root for becoming hot or warm. In Ecclesiastes the heat is shared between people; in Genesis it fills the day, showing the same root at work in the body and in the world around it.
