King James wording
King James Version
Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.THE KEY
The verse locates real strength in wisdom: one wise person can outweigh the ten rulers who hold a city’s power.
THE MEANING
Wisdom strengthens you in a way that does not depend on gathering force around you. One discerning person can outweigh the combined power of the authorities in the city. The verse measures strength by what wisdom makes possible within a person, not by how many people command the streets.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that strength must come from having more people or greater authority on your side; wisdom itself can make one person stronger than a city’s rulers.
THE ROOT
חָכְמָה
ḥokhmāh
GROWS FROM
חכם
ḥ-k-m
To be wise or skillful; practical discernment and competent craft.
The root carries the sense of skill as well as wisdom, so this is not merely abstract knowledge. Wisdom is a practiced capacity that makes the wise person strong.
ALSO GROWS
ḥākām: A wise or skillful person
חָכָם
The verse links the same root directly: wisdom strengthens the wise person who embodies it.
ḥokhmāh: Wisdom, skill, or practical discernment
חָכְמָה
The word names a capacity that can be exercised, not just an idea someone possesses.
תָּעֹז
tāʿōz
GROWS FROM
עזז
ʿ-z-z
To be strong, prevail, or be mighty.
“fortifies” in this verse is tāʿōz. The verb says wisdom makes the wise strong. Its root also names strength and a stronghold, giving the image of wisdom as an inner fortification rather than a crowd gathered around someone.
ALSO GROWS
ʿōz: Strength or might
עֹז
This is the strength wisdom gives in the verse: a quality of the person, not just an outward show of force.
māʿōz: A stronghold or place of refuge
מָעוֹז
The same root can describe a place of strength; here, wisdom supplies that fortified steadiness within the wise.
שַׁלִּיטִים
shallīṭīm
GROWS FROM
שלט
š-l-ṭ
To rule or exercise authority.
The Hebrew term also carries the sense of rulers or holders of dominion. Wisdom’s strength is therefore compared with concentrated civic authority, as well as with physical might.
ALSO GROWS
shālaṭ: To rule or have dominion
שָׁלַט
It reveals the kind of power gathered by the ten: authority exercised over others.
shilṭōn: Dominion, authority, or rule
שִׁלְטוֹן
This branch makes the contrast sharper: wisdom’s strength can exceed the authority held by the city’s rulers.
THE PATTERN
Wisdom can outweigh concentrated force because strength also lies in discernment.
A wise man is strong; yes, a man who perceives firms his strength. And I say, wisdom is better than might, yet the poor man's wisdom is scorned, and his words are not heard. And they were not strong enough to stand against the wisdom and the breath by which he spoke.THE THREAD
A wise man is strong; yes, a man who perceives firms his strength.Proverbs 24:5 repeats the Hebrew roots for wise (חכם) and strength (עז) that shape Ecclesiastes 7:19. The connection is built into the Hebrew: wisdom and strength grow from a shared pairing, not just a similarity in English.
