King James wording
King James Version
When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)THE KEY
The heart gives itself to wisdom, yet what it sees is a world whose activity runs through the night without rest.
THE MEANING
Your heart is set on understanding wisdom and seeing what is happening across the earth. What comes into view is activity that continues through day and night, and a person who sees no sleep. The verse holds clear seeing beside unrest that understanding alone does not quiet.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that seeing everything clearly necessarily brings ease: the one who watches the earth’s activity can still be sleepless.
THE ROOT
נָתַתִּי
natatti
GROWS FROM
נתן
To give, set, or place.
“give my heart” in this verse is natatti. English “applied” makes the heart sound like a tool being used; the Hebrew says, “I gave my heart” to this search. Inquiry becomes an act of placing the inner self into the seeing, while the result is not mastery but the sight of wakefulness that has no night off.
ALSO GROWS
natan: To give, set, or place.
נָתַן
This root meaning is present in “I gave my heart”: the search begins by placing the heart toward wisdom.
mattanah: Gift.
מַתָּנָה
The same root connects giving with a gift; here the heart itself is given over to the work of seeing.
THE PATTERN
The earth’s activity exceeds one person’s ability to comprehend, control, or outlast it.
For all his days are pains, and his task is grief. Even in the night his heart does not lie down. This too is vapor. It is emptiness for you to rise up early and sit up late, to eat the bread of pains; for so he gives his beloved sleep.and he sleeps and wakes night and day, and the seed sprouts and stretches up, and he does not know how.THE THREAD
I have set my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. This is a harmful task God has given to the sons of humankind, to be bowed beneath it.The Hebrew verb behind “gave” here is the same נתן (natan) behind “applied” in 8:16: in both verses, the heart is placed into the search. The earlier verse names the search and its burden; 8:16 shows what that searching sees, activity that carries through the night without sleep.
