What Does Ecclesiastes 8:17 Mean?

And I see all the work of God. Humankind cannot find the work done under the sun, though a person toils to seek it and does not find it. Even if the wise one says he knows, he cannot find it.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.

The verse places wisdom and toil on the same side of the limit: neither can find the whole work of God.

You can behold the work of God and still not gather it into a complete explanation. Even when you labor to search, what is done under the sun exceeds what you can find; wisdom does not turn partial sight into total knowledge. The limit belongs to the human knower, not necessarily to the work.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that enough effort or intelligence will make reality fully legible. An unanswered question does not by itself prove you failed to search hard enough.

מַעֲשֶׂה

ma'aseh

GROWS FROM

עשה

To do or make.

“work / done” in this verse is ma'aseh. “The work of God” and the work “done” under the sun belong to the same Hebrew root, ⁨עשה⁩, meaning “do, make.” The verse places God’s work and what happens under the sun in one field of doing, then shows that human effort cannot find its full measure.

ALSO GROWS

asah: To do, make.

עָשָׂה

This verb is the seed of both “work” and “done,” joining the work being beheld to the work happening under the sun.

ma'aseh: A deed, work, or doing.

מַעֲשֶׂה

This noun names the “work” that the verse says a person cannot fully find out.

מָצָא

matsa

GROWS FROM

מצא

To find, come upon, or attain.

“find out / find” in this verse is matsa. The root ⁨מָצָא⁩ repeats at the verse’s points of failure: labor seeks but does not find, and even the wise cannot find. The repeated word makes finding the measure of human understanding, while its sense of coming upon or attaining gives that limit a tangible edge.

ALSO GROWS

matsa: To find, meet, or come upon.

מָצָא

This is the repeated verb behind “find out” and “find,” marking what the laboring and wise person cannot attain.

nimtsa: To be found; to be present.

נִמְצָא

This passive form carries the same root into the state of being found, highlighting the gap between something’s presence and a searcher’s ability to find it.

God’s work exceeds the reach of human search, even when wisdom continues to inquire.

Can you find God by searching? Can you find the Almighty to his limit?
Job 11:7 · SDVThe question presses the same limit: searching cannot attain the full measure of God.
The hidden things belong to the LORD our God, but the uncovered things belong to us and to our children for the ages, that we may do all the words of this instruction.
Deuteronomy 29:29 · SDVThe verse distinguishes what remains hidden from what is revealed, giving human understanding a real but bounded reach.
O the depth of the riches of both wisdom and knowledge of God! How beyond searching out are his judgments, and how beyond tracking are his ways!
Romans 11:33 · SDVThe verse names God’s judgments as beyond searching and God’s ways as beyond finding out.
Can you find God by searching? Can you find the Almighty to his limit?
Job 11:7 · SDV

Job repeats the Hebrew root ⁨מָצָא⁩ (matsa, “find”) in both questions, the same root repeated in Ecclesiastes as labor and wisdom fail to find the work. The shared root makes the boundary vivid: searching can continue, yet finding the whole remains beyond human reach.
