King James wording
King James Version
For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.THE KEY
Your alignment, wisdom, and work are held in God’s hand, while the future remains unreadable to you.
THE MEANING
Your work and the way you live are held in God’s keeping, even when you cannot tell what lies ahead. What stands before you does not reveal whether you will meet love or hatred; wisdom does not make the future transparent.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse loosens the belief that being wise or aligned should let you predict what comes next, or that uncertainty means you are outside God’s care.
THE ROOT
יֹדֵעַ
yōdēaʿ
GROWS FROM
ידע
To know, recognize, or perceive.
“perceives” in this verse is yōdēaʿ. English “knoweth” can sound like possessing facts, but ידע also carries the sense of perception and recognition. Even this kind of knowing cannot read whether what lies ahead will be love or hatred; being held in God’s hand does not make the future transparent.
ALSO GROWS
yādaʿ: To know, recognize, or perceive.
יָדַע
This verb is the seed of “knoweth,” bringing perception, not prediction, into focus.
daʿat: Knowledge or understanding.
דַּעַת
This noun from the same root links knowing to what can be recognized, while the verse marks a limit on what you can know about what is ahead.
צַדִּיקִים
tsaddiqim
GROWS FROM
צדק
To be just or right; alignment.
“aligned” in this verse is tsaddiqim. The word belongs to the same family as צֶדֶק (tzedek), alignment or justice, and צְדָקָה (tzedakah), justice expressed in action. That connects the righteous with their works, which the verse places together in God’s hand without making them a guarantee about what they will encounter.
ALSO GROWS
tzedek: Justice, rightness, alignment.
צֶדֶק
It shows the shared root beneath “the righteous”: a state of alignment.
tzedakah: Righteousness or justice expressed in action.
צְדָקָה
It echoes the verse’s pairing of the righteous with their works.
THE PATTERN
The future remains beyond human knowing even as a person’s times and steps remain in God’s hand.
My times are in your hand; snatch me from the hand of my enemies and from those who pursue me.A person's heart plans his way, but the LORD sets his steps firm. You do not know what tomorrow holds. For what is your life? You are a mist, showing itself for a little while, and then made unseen.THE THREAD
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O LORD, you probe me, and you perceive me.Both verses use ידע (yada), the language of knowing and perceiving. Ecclesiastes names the limit on your knowing of what lies ahead; Psalm 139 turns the same root toward God’s knowing of you.
