This verse in the King James

King James wording
The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

Wisdom does not need to overpower the room to be heard; quiet can carry it farther than command.

Wise words can be received in quiet now, while a ruler’s cry among fools does not make the room wise. Rank and volume cannot make a voice worthy of being heard.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The loudest or highest-ranking voice is the one most worthy of being heard.

נִשְׁמָעִים

nishma’im

GROWS FROM

שמע

sh-m-ʿ

Hear, listen, heed, and respond.

“heard” in this verse is nishma’im. The word means more than sound reaching an ear: it carries the sense of listening and responding. The verse’s wise words are received, while a ruler’s cry does not command the same response.

ALSO GROWS

shema: Hear and respond.

שְׁמַע

The same root opens Deuteronomy’s call to hear, joining reception with response.

shemu’ah: A report, something heard.

שְׁמוּעָה

This branch shows how what is heard can become a message that is carried onward.

בְּנַחַת

GROWS FROM

נוח

n-w-ḥ

Rest, settle, come to rest.

The quiet here is linked to rest and settledness, not simply the absence of sound. Wisdom is heard where the room is settled, rather than forced to compete with an outcry.

ALSO GROWS

nuach: To rest or settle.

נוּחַ

This verb exposes the root beneath quiet: a state of coming to rest.

menuchah: Rest or a resting place.

מְנוּחָה

This related word makes quiet feel like a condition in which wisdom can be received.

Wisdom is received through quiet attention, while forceful speech cannot make itself wise.

A soft answer turns away the burning, but words of pain stir up the nostrils.
Proverbs 15:1 · SDVA gentle answer changes what forceful words would inflame.
And after the quaking, a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire, a sound of thin stillness.
1 Kings 19:12 · SDVThe still, small voice stands in contrast to the upheaval and fire that precede it.
Know this, my beloved brothers. Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to swell.
James 1:19 · SDVThe verse gives priority to listening before speech or anger.
Hear and respond, O Israel. The LORD our God is one LORD.
Deuteronomy 6:4 · SDV

Ecclesiastes says the wise are heard, from ⁨שָׁמַע⁩ (shama, hear and respond); Deuteronomy begins with ⁨שְׁמַע⁩ (shema, hear and respond). The shared root opens hearing as active reception, helping explain why quiet gives wisdom room to land.
