King James wording
King James Version
Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;THE KEY
The “mention” is remembrance: prayer makes the person held in mind present through gratitude.
THE MEANING
As you remember another person, prayer gives that relationship a place before God, and thanksgiving names what is good in their presence. Memory, gratitude, and prayer move together; the person is remembered as someone for whom thanks is given.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It loosens the belief that prayer only counts when it asks for something: remembering someone with thanks is already prayer.
THE ROOT
εὐχαριστῶν
eucharistōn
GROWS FROM
χαρ-
char-
The word-family of χάρις (charis), meaning favor; in εὐχαριστέω, favor is acknowledged with thanks.
The Greek verb for giving thanks carries χάρις (charis, favor) within it. Gratitude here keeps the language of favor audible as thanks is given for another person.
ALSO GROWS
charis: favor
χάρις
This is the word-family preserved inside the verb for giving thanks.
charizomai: grant freely, show favor
χαρίζομαι
It describes favor as freely given, echoing the gratitude expressed for another person.
charisma: gift
χάρισμα
This word names a gift bestowed as favor, extending the same family of meaning.
μνείαν
mneian
GROWS FROM
μνη-/μνα- (mnē-/mna-)
The Greek word-family of remembering and keeping in mind.
The word translated “mention” is μνεία (mneia), remembrance. Prayer here begins with sustained recollection: the person is held in mind, then named before God.
ALSO GROWS
mimnēskomai: remember
μιμνῄσκομαι
It makes explicit the remembering contained in μνεία.
anamnēsis: remembrance
ἀνάμνησις
It shows how the same word-family names memory brought to mind.
THE PATTERN
Prayer gives another person a place before God by carrying them in relationship and remembrance.
And the LORD returned the captivity of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the LORD added to all that was Job's, twice over.We give thanks to God always for you all, making remembrance of you upon our prayers.I return thanks to my God in every remembrance of you.THE THREAD
I return thanks to my God in every remembrance of you.“Remembrance” here is μνεία (mneia), the same word-family as “mention” in Ephesians. Philippians makes the link between memory and thanks explicit: remembering someone becomes an occasion for gratitude.
