This verse in the King James

King James wording
Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

The mystery is an intention God has already set forth and now makes knowable.

God’s hidden intention is made known to you now as something you can perceive, not a puzzle left sealed. Its disclosure comes from God’s own purpose and good pleasure.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that God’s will is meant to remain permanently unknowable: here, what was hidden is made known.

γνωρίσας

gnōrisas

GROWS FROM

⁨γνώ-⁩ (gnō-), the knowing stem shared with ⁨γινώσκω⁩ (ginōskō)

Know or perceive; in ⁨γνωρίζω⁩ (gnōrizō), make known.

“Made known” belongs to the same knowing family as ⁨γινώσκω⁩ (ginōskō), know or perceive. The hidden will becomes something encountered and perceived, rather than information that remains out of reach.

ALSO GROWS

ginōskō: Know, perceive; knowing by encounter

γινώσκω

It links the disclosure of the mystery with knowing through encounter, rather than knowing as mere information.

gnōsis: Knowledge

γνῶσις

This branch shows the movement from what is hidden into what can be known.

προέθετο

proetheto

GROWS FROM

⁨τίθημι⁩ (tithēmi), through ⁨προτίθημι⁩ (protithēmi): to put, set, or place; with ⁨πρό⁩, to set before

Put, set, or place; in this compound, set before or set forth.

“set before” in this verse is proetheto. The word translated “purposed” carries the sense of setting something forth. The mystery that is made known is joined to an intention already set forth in God, rather than one the reader has to invent.

ALSO GROWS

tithēmi: Put, set, place

τίθημι

This basic verb supplies the image of an intention being set in place.

prothesis: Setting forth, purpose

πρόθεσις

This related noun appears in Romans 8:28, connecting the intention set forth here with God’s purpose there.

What is concealed becomes knowable through God’s act of revealing.

For the Lord GOD does nothing, unless he uncovers his secret to his servants the prophets.
Amos 3:7 · SDVThe hidden thing becomes known when the LORD reveals it.
He uncovers the deep and hidden things. He knows what is in the darkness, and the light rests with him.
Daniel 2:22 · SDVWhat lies in darkness is brought into view by the one who knows it.
The mystery that has been hidden away from the ages and from the generations, but now has been made visible to his set-apart ones.
Colossians 1:26 · SDVThe mystery moves from being hidden to being made manifest.
And we know that all things work together toward the good for those who love God, for those who are called according to what he has placed before them.
Romans 8:28 · SDV

The word translated “purpose” is ⁨πρόθεσις⁩ (prothesis), from the same ⁨τίθημι⁩ (tithēmi), set or place, family as “purposed” here. The disclosed mystery is joined to an intention already set forth, and Romans connects that purpose with those who are called.
