This verse in the King James

King James wording
For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,

The word translated “prisoner” carries the image of a bond, holding Paul’s confinement together with his belonging to Jesus and his service for the Gentiles.

You see constraint and purpose held in one sentence: Paul is a prisoner of Jesus the Anointed One, and his bonds are “for you Gentiles.” The Gentiles are not incidental to the verse; they are named as the people for whom this bond is borne.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that constraint makes a life useless to others dissolves here: Paul is named as a prisoner, and the verse still places the Gentiles within the purpose of his bonds.

δέσμιος

desmios

GROWS FROM

δεσμ-

desm-

Bond, that which binds; from ⁨δέω⁩ (deō), to bind.

“the bound one” in this verse is desmios. The word names Paul through a bond, not merely through a location. Its word-family can describe both restraint and connection, so “prisoner” carries a relational image beneath the English label.

ALSO GROWS

desmos: Bond or chain.

δέσμος

It names the bond beneath “prisoner,” making the image of constraint explicit.

syndesmos: Bond or link.

σύνδεσμος

Ephesians 4:3 uses this same word-family for the bond that holds unity together, showing that binding language can also name connection.

Χριστοῦ

Christou

GROWS FROM

χρίω

chriō

To anoint.

“Christ” names Jesus as the Anointed One; it is a title, not a surname. In “prisoner of Jesus Christ,” Paul’s bond is described in relation to the Anointed One, giving his confinement a personal allegiance as well as a cost.

ALSO GROWS

christos: Anointed one.

χριστός

This is the title used for Jesus in the verse; its root keeps the meaning of anointing inside the name.

chrisma: Anointing.

χρῖσμα

This related word makes the shared root visible: the title “Anointed One” grows from the action of anointing.

God’s purpose carries deliverance across ethnic boundaries and into shared belonging.

And he said, It is a light thing that you should be my servant, to stand up the tribes of Jacob, and to turn back the guarded ones of Israel. I will also set you as a light for the nations, that you may be my deliverance to the edge of the earth.
Isaiah 49:6 · SDVThe servant’s work extends beyond Israel to become a light for the Gentiles and reach the end of the earth.
But in every nation the one who lives in awe of him and works alignment is received by him.
Acts 10:35 · SDVAcceptance is described as reaching people in every nation.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither servant nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Jesus the Anointed One.
Galatians 3:28 · SDVEthnic and social divisions do not define the shared belonging named in Christ Jesus.
pressing to keep the oneness of the breath in the binding of wholeness.
Ephesians 4:3 · SDV

Ephesians 4:3 uses ⁨σύνδεσμος⁩ (syndesmos, “bond” or “link”), built on the same ⁨δεσμ-⁩ (desm-, “bond”) family as ⁨δεσμιος⁩ (desmios, “prisoner”) here. The same word-family can name restraint in one verse and what holds a community together in another, giving Paul’s bonds a second edge.
