King James wording
King James Version
That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:THE KEY
Three Greek “together” words make one claim: the nations share the inheritance, the body, and the promise.
THE MEANING
The promise reaches you as full participation: shared inheritance, shared body, shared promise. The verse gives the nations the same standing in the anointed one through the gospel; belonging has no lesser tier at the edge.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The promise belongs to one people, while everyone else can only stand at its margins.
THE ROOT
συγκληρονόμα
synklēronoma
GROWS FROM
κληρ (klēr), in κλῆρος (klēros)
An allotted share or portion; κληρονόμος (klēronomos) is an heir who receives a share.
“joint heirs” in this verse is synklēronoma. The word joins “together” to “heir”: the nations receive the inheritance as co-heirs. The same inheritance is shared, not divided into first-class and guest portions.
ALSO GROWS
klēros: Lot, allotted share
κλῆρος
It names the portion at the heart of inheritance, making the shared gift visible inside “fellowheirs.”
klēronomia: Inheritance
κληρονομία
This related word names the inheritance itself: shared status and shared gift belong together.
σύσσωμα
syssōma
GROWS FROM
σῶμα
sōma
Body; the compound means sharing one body or being of the same body.
“of one body” in this verse is syssōma. “Same body” is not merely a group with similar interests; the Greek word places the nations within one shared body. It is the second expression of togetherness in this sentence.
ALSO GROWS
sōma: Body
σῶμα
This is the word preserved inside σύσσωμα: what is shared is a body, not simply an agreement.
sōmatikos: Bodily, physical
σωματικός
This related form keeps the word grounded in embodied existence; the shared body is more than an abstract label.
συμμέτοχα
symmetocha
GROWS FROM
μέτοχος
metochos
A sharer or partner; the compound means sharing together.
“fellow sharers” in this verse is symmetocha. The promise is not only announced to the nations; they are named as participants in it. With “fellowheirs” and “same body,” this is the third form of shared belonging.
ALSO GROWS
metechō: Have a share in, participate
μετέχω
This verb makes participation active: the promise is something shared in, not merely observed from outside.
metochē: Participation, share
μετοχή
The related noun names the common share that “partakers” gives to the nations.
THE PATTERN
God’s promise gathers people across nations into shared blessing, shared belonging, and shared inheritance.
And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse, and in you all the families of the ground will be blessed. So we, though many, are one body in the Anointed One, and each of us is a limb of one another. And if you are of the Anointed One, then you are the seed of Abraham, heirs according to the promise.THE THREAD
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and co-heirs with the Anointed One; if indeed we suffer together with him, so that we may also be clothed in weight with him.Ephesians’ συγκληρονόμα (synklēronoma, co-heirs) and Romans’ συγκληρονόμοι (synklēronomoi, joint-heirs) share the κληρ (klēr, allotted share) word family. Romans names the same shared inheritance, opening “fellowheirs” as full co-heirship.
