This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then the king said, Cause Haman to make haste, that he may do as Esther hath said. So the king and Haman came to the banquet that Esther had prepared.

Esther’s preparation becomes the command’s destination: the king orders Haman to act, but the feast they enter is already the work she has made.

A voice can shape the room before it gives an order. The king’s authority puts Haman in motion, while Esther’s words and preparation determine where that motion leads. The banquet is already made when the command sends them toward it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that the person who issues the command alone controls what happens dissolves here: Esther has already shaped the encounter through what she says and prepares.

לַעֲשׂוֹת

laʿasot

GROWS FROM

עשה

do, make, accomplish

“do / prepared” in this verse is laʿasot. Hebrew uses the same ⁨עשה⁩ root in the king’s command that Haman “do” what Esther said and in the clause that says Esther “prepared” the banquet. English makes obedience and preparation sound like different acts; the shared root lets Esther’s making shape the very action that brings them to her table.

ALSO GROWS

maʿaseh: work, deed, or action

מַעֲשֶׂה

This branch keeps an action connected to the work that gives it form, as Esther’s preparation gives the command somewhere to lead.

ʿoseh: one who does or makes

עֹשֶׂה

The same root can name the maker, bringing Esther’s agency into view alongside the king’s command.

A prepared table becomes the setting where its host’s arrangement brings enemies, guests, or companions into one encounter.

You lay out a table before my face, in full view of those who press me. You make my head rich with oil; my cup is soaked full.
Psalm 23:5 · SDVThe host lays out a table in enemy sight, making the prepared meal the setting where danger and provision meet.
But he said to him, A certain man made a great supper, and called many.
Luke 14:16 · SDVThe host makes the supper first, then his invitation draws guests into an encounter already set.
There they made him a supper, and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with him.
John 12:2 · SDVMartha’s serving shapes the supper where Jesus, Lazarus, and others gather.
And Esther answered, If it is good for the king, let the king and Haman come today to the drinking that I have prepared for him.
Esther 5:4 · SDV

Esther 5:4 gives the same ⁨עשה⁩ root in Esther’s own voice: she says she has already prepared the banquet. In 5:5, that same doing becomes the destination of the king’s command, showing her agency shaping the event before either man arrives.
