This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you.

Pharaoh grants movement while retaining control over what the people need for service, so the permission still preserves bondage.

Pharaoh’s offer lets the children go with Moses (⁨מֹשֶׁה⁩, Mosheh, “drawn out”), but keeps the flocks and herds in place. The permission divides what belongs together: the people may move toward service while what that service requires remains under Pharaoh’s control. The verse speaks to any promised release whose terms still hold part of life back.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that permission to leave is the same as full freedom. Here, the people may move, but the condition still governs what they can carry into their service.

עִבְדוּ

ʿivdû

GROWS FROM

עבד

to work, labor, or serve

The same root names service and the servant whose labor can be controlled. Pharaoh permits the people to serve the LORD while fixing their herds in place; the next verse shows that this limit reaches into what their service requires.

ALSO GROWS

ʿeved: servant, worker, or slave

עֶבֶד

The servant and the act of serving grow from one root, linking service with the question of who controls the labor.

ʿavodah: work, labor, or service

עֲבֹדָה

This branch brings the practical work of service into view: Pharaoh’s condition reaches beyond where the people may go to what they can bring with them.

Power preserves bondage by granting movement while retaining control over what departure requires.

And Pharaoh said, I will let you go, that you may slaughter to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away; plead for me.
Exodus 8:28 · SDVPharaoh permits departure but limits how far the people may go, keeping control inside the permission.
Not so. Go now, you mighty men, and serve the LORD, for that is what you have been seeking. And he drove them out from the face of Pharaoh.
Exodus 10:11 · SDVPharaoh allows only the men to leave, dividing the people and keeping the rest within his control.
And this because of false brothers smuggled in, who slipped in alongside to spy out the freedom we hold in Jesus the Anointed One, so that they might enslave us.
Galatians 2:4 · SDVThe attempt to bring people back into bondage shows the same struggle over who controls the terms of freedom.
Our livestock also will go with us. Not one hoof shall be left, for from it we will take to serve the LORD our God. And we do not know with what we will serve the LORD until we come there.
Exodus 10:26 · SDV

The same root ⁨עבד⁩ (ʿavad, to serve or work) appears in both verses. Moses names the retained animals as necessary for the service Pharaoh says he permits. The boundary around the herds reaches into the act of service itself.
