This verse in the King James

King James wording
And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.

The same Hebrew root first forbids leaving a remainder, then names whatever remains as the very thing that must be burned.

Your portion is consumed within this meal’s appointed span; it is not carried into morning. Whatever remains at dawn is burned, so the verse gives even the leftover a definite end.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that every leftover should be saved: here, keeping the meal’s remainder past morning is not permitted.

תּוֹתִירוּ

tōtîrū

GROWS FROM

יָתַר

To remain, be left over, or exceed; a surplus.

“remain / that which remaineth” in this verse is tōtîrū. The command and the leftover both grow from ⁨יָתַר⁩ (yathar, to remain or be left over). English separates them into different forms, while Hebrew echoes one root: do not leave a surplus, and if one remains, it must be dealt with.

ALSO GROWS

yeter: Remainder, excess, or what is left over.

יֶתֶר

This names the surplus the verse forbids carrying into morning.

yitron: Surplus, gain, or advantage.

יִתְרוֹן

This branch shows the root can name what exceeds a measure; here, that excess is not kept.

תִּשְׂרֹפוּ

tisrefu

GROWS FROM

שָׂרַף

To burn or consume with fire.

“burn” in this verse is tisrefu. The root’s related forms describe things as fiery or burning. Here, fire gives the remainder a definite end: it is removed from the meal rather than preserved as another portion.

ALSO GROWS

serafim: Burning ones, the seraphim.

שְׂרָפִים

This form carries the root’s fiery quality as a description.

saraf: A fiery serpent.

שָׂרָף

This form also carries the root’s association with burning or fiery intensity.

What remains after a meal receives a deliberate next action; it is not left unaccounted for.

And Moses said, Let no one leave any of it until the morning.
Exodus 16:19 · SDVThe manna’s remainder is governed by a clear boundary: it is not kept overnight.
And the flesh of the slaughter of his wholeness offerings, for the open hand, shall be eaten the same day that it is brought near. He shall not leave any of it until the morning.
Leviticus 7:15 · SDVThe thanksgiving meal’s remainder is handled within the day it is offered.
When they were filled, he said to his disciples, Gather up the broken pieces that remain, so that nothing perishes.
John 6:12 · SDVHere the remaining fragments are gathered, showing that the meal’s surplus still receives a deliberate next action.
And Moses said, Let no one leave any of it until the morning.
Exodus 16:19 · SDV

Exodus 16:19 uses ⁨יָתַר⁩ (yathar, to remain or be left over), the same root repeated in this verse’s command and its description of the remainder. Together, the verses make the morning the boundary for what may be left from a meal.
