King James wording
King James Version
And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men.THE KEY
The Hebrew verb carries sending and release together: the people’s exit is the moment Egypt’s grip lets go.
THE MEANING
The pressure on the people flips direction: those holding them hurry them out. Release arrives inside the senders’ panic, with the words, “We be all dead men.” The verse holds departure and terror in the same moment.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The power that holds me can decide forever whether I leave.
THE ROOT
לְשַׁלְּחָם
ləšalləḥām
GROWS FROM
שלח
To send, send away, or release.
English gives you “send out,” while the Hebrew carries release within the act of sending away. Here Egypt’s panic becomes the force that sends the people forth.
ALSO GROWS
shilluaḥ: Sending away; dismissal.
שִׁלּוּחַ
It makes the release in this verse visible as an act of sending away.
shaluach: Sent; dispatched.
שָׁלוּחַ
The same root describes someone who has been sent forth, linking release with movement outward.
THE PATTERN
Release appears as a sending forth that breaks the hold of confinement.
And afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told the Great House, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may dance a feast to me in the wilderness. Is this not the fast I have chosen, to open the bonds of wickedness, to untie the cords of the yoke, to send the crushed away free, and to tear away every yoke? The breath of the LORD is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the emptied. He has sent me to heal the shattered in heart, to herald release to the captives, and the return of sight for the blind, to send the crushed away into release.THE THREAD
And afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told the Great House, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may dance a feast to me in the wilderness. The same verb, שָׁלַח (shalach, send or release), moves from Moses’ demand here to Egypt’s act in Exodus 12:33. What is first spoken as a plea becomes a release carried out, with fear now in the mouths of those doing the sending.
