This verse in the King James

King James wording
Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.

The verse names both the fermented food and its starter, making the clearing reach the cause as well as the result.

The clearing reaches the reader’s whole domain: both what is consumed and what is kept nearby are in view. The movement out of Mitzrayim (⁨מִצְרַיִם⁩, “the two narrows”) reaches ordinary space, making the absence of ferment part of the passage toward wholeness.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that removing the visible product is enough while its source stays hidden: the verse names both, across the whole boundary.

חָמֵץ

chametz

GROWS FROM

ח־מ־ץ

ḥ-m-ṣ

To be sour or fermented; by extension, to be leavened.

“no risen bread” in this verse is chametz. The root ties leavened food to souring and fermentation, a process rather than just an ingredient. The verse also names ⁨שְׂאֹר⁩ (se’or, leavening starter), reaching from the fermented food to the agent that ferments it.

ALSO GROWS

chametz: Leavened food; something fermented.

חָמֵץ

It names the finished product that is excluded from the meal and the household.

chometz: Vinegar or sour wine.

חֹמֶץ

It shares the root’s souring quality, showing the transformation contained in the word for leavened food.

A small ferment works through a whole measure, so its presence or removal becomes a whole-domain matter.

For seven days no leaven will be found in your houses, for whoever eats what is risen, that living soul will be cut off from the assembly of Israel, whether a sojourner or a native of the land.
Exodus 12:19 · SDVThe absence extends through every house, and eating the leavened food carries the stated consequence.
Another parable he spoke to them. The governance of the heavens is like yeast, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until all of it had risen.
Matthew 13:33 · SDVHidden leaven works through the whole measure, showing how its presence changes everything it reaches.
Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?
1 Corinthians 5:6 · SDVEven a small amount is described as reaching the whole lump.
You shall eat no soured bread with it. Seven days you shall eat unsoured bread with it, the bread of being bent low, for in flight you came out of the land of Egypt, so that you may remember the day you came out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life.
Deuteronomy 16:3 · SDV

Deuteronomy uses the same Hebrew ⁨חָמֵץ⁩ (chametz, leavened food) and ties the leaven-free meal to leaving Mitzrayim (⁨מִצְרַיִם⁩, “the two narrows”). The shared root gives the absence a direction: the cleared meal marks movement out of constriction.
