This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

The wilderness and the spoken word share a consonant echo in Hebrew, making even the barren place sound like a place where speech is beginning.

You are met in the pause before the saying is disclosed: speech is already underway and directed toward a hearer. The surrounding wilderness echoes the consonants of ⁨דָּבָר⁩ (davar, word) in ⁨מִדְבָּר⁩ (midbar, wilderness), so the empty stretch can hold the sound of a word beginning.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Scarcity means no answer is forming. This verse places the beginning of speech before its content is revealed.

וַיְדַבֵּר

waydaber

GROWS FROM

דבר

d-b-r

To speak or utter; the same root also forms a word for a matter or thing.

“spake” in this verse is waydaber. The verse’s surrounding scene places ⁨מִדְבָּר⁩ (midbar, wilderness) beside ⁨דָּבָר⁩ (davar, word) in a consonant echo; their lexical relationship is uncertain, but the echo is audible. Speech and the barren place occupy the same Hebrew soundscape.

ALSO GROWS

dibber: Spoke or declared.

דִּבֵּר

This is the verb form rendered “spake” here.

davar: A spoken word, matter, or thing.

דָּבָר

The root holds speech and what is spoken together, so a word can be more than sound: it can be a matter taking shape.

מֹשֶׁה

Mosheh

GROWS FROM

משה

m-sh-h

To draw out, especially from water.

The name carries a remembered movement out of water: the drawn-out one now receives speech. The verse places this name beside the act of speaking, as Moses receives what is spoken.

ALSO GROWS

mashah: To draw someone or something out.

מָשָׁה

This verb supplies the name’s stated meaning in Exodus 2:10.

meshitihu: The phrase “I drew him out,” used of Moses being drawn from the water.

מְשִׁיתִהוּ

It makes the name’s movement explicit: the one drawn out becomes the hearer of the word.

Divine speech brings what is unseen into form and sustains life beyond what material provision alone can supply.

And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
Genesis 1:3 · SDVThe spoken word precedes the visible form of what comes to be.
And he bent you low, and made you hunger, and fed you with manna, which you had never perceived, nor had your fathers, so that he might make you perceive that humankind does not live by bread alone, but by every word that goes out from the mouth of the LORD does humankind live.
Deuteronomy 8:3 · SDVThe word of the LORD sustains life alongside the bread that feeds the body.
In the beginning was the word, and the word was turned toward God, and the word was God.
John 1:1 · SDVThe Word is present at the beginning, before anything else is named.
So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth. It shall not return to me empty, but shall do what I delight in, and shall break through in the thing to which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:11 · SDV

Isaiah uses ⁨דָּבָר⁩ (davar, word), from the same root as “spake” here, then describes that word going out and accomplishing its purpose. Exodus 16:11 catches speech as it begins; Isaiah shows its reach.
