King James wording
King James Version
And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.THE KEY
The sixth day’s double bread is tomorrow’s rest already included in today’s measure.
THE MEANING
The reader’s provision is not a flat daily quota; it is timed to a rhythm that makes room for rest. The sixth day’s portion carries tomorrow inside it, and the rulers bring what they see into the shared life of the congregation. The measure is enough for what this rhythm requires.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the fear that a day of rest must create a day of lack: the needed portion is already doubled before the pause.
THE ROOT
מִשְׁנֶה
mishneh
GROWS FROM
שׁנה
to repeat or do a second time; hence a second measure or doubling
“double portion” in this verse is mishneh. English’s “twice as much” sounds like quantity alone; mishneh also carries the sense of a second measure, from the root for repeating or doing again. The doubled gathering is a timed repetition within the cycle, arriving before the Sabbath’s cessation from gathering.
ALSO GROWS
sheni: second
שֵׁנִי
The same root marks a second place or turn, so the doubled omer belongs to a sequence rather than being arbitrary excess.
shanah: year; recurring cycle
שָׁנָה
The cycle word echoes the weekly rhythm: this second measure arrives at a designated point, on the sixth day.
THE PATTERN
Provision is arranged around rest, so what is gathered can be enough for more than one day’s need.
And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be double what they gather each day.And when they measured it with an omer, the one who gathered much had nothing over, and the one who gathered little had no lack. Each one gathered according to his eating. He said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.THE THREAD
And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be double what they gather each day.The same word, mishneh, appears in both verses: here the doubled portion is gathered, there it is promised. Verse 5 shows that this measure belongs to the rhythm from the start; verse 22 is when the assembly sees it.
