King James wording
King James Version
So the people rested on the seventh day.THE KEY
The Hebrew word for “rested” shares its root with “Sabbath”: the day takes its shape from stopping.
THE MEANING
The seventh day is marked by a shared cessation: the people stop their work together. The Hebrew verb carries the same root as Shabbat, so rest is not only recovery after labor; stopping gives the day its shape.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the idea that rest is only leftover time after work: here, stopping is the defining act of the seventh day.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשְׁבְּתוּ
wayyishbetu
GROWS FROM
שבת
To cease or stop.
“stopped” in this verse is wayyishbetu. The people’s verb for “rested” grows from the same root as Shabbat. English gives us “rest” and “Sabbath” as separate ideas, while Hebrew holds the day and its defining act of cessation together.
ALSO GROWS
shabbat: Sabbath; a day of cessation.
שַׁבָּת
The shared root connects the people’s resting directly to the name of the day.
shabbaton: A Sabbath rest or solemn cessation.
שַׁבָּתוֹן
This related form makes the link between a set-apart day and a stopping explicit.
THE PATTERN
Rest takes shape through cessation, and its rhythm extends beyond the one who stops working.
And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had made, and he stopped on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall stop, that your ox and your donkey may settle, and the son of your handmaid and the stranger may be refreshed. Therefore a Sabbath settling remains for the people of God.THE THREAD
And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had made, and he stopped on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. The Hebrew verb שָׁבַת (shavat, to cease) appears in both this verse and Genesis 2:2. The people’s stopping echoes the creation pattern: the seventh day is recognized through cessation.
