This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it up before the LORD, to be kept for your generations.

A portion of the manna is guarded beyond its use, turning daily provision into a witness that outlives the moment.

Provision does not end at consumption: a portion remains before the LORD as a witness for generations. Moses (⁨מֹשֶׁה⁩, Moshe, associated with ⁨מָשָׁה⁩, mashah, “draw out”) carries the image of one drawn out; here, nourishment is drawn from its daily use and kept in view. What sustains you now can remain visible as testimony for those who come after.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie this undoes is that what feeds you matters only while you are consuming it.

לְמִשְׁמֶרֶת

le-mishmeret

GROWS FROM

שׁמר

sh-m-r

To watch over, guard, or keep.

In English, “kept” names the result; the Hebrew ⁨מִשְׁמֶרֶת⁩ (mishmeret) also carries the image of an entrusted charge under watch. Preservation here is active guarding, leaving the provision visible as a witness.

ALSO GROWS

shamar: To keep, guard, or watch over.

שָׁמַר

The manna is held under care so it remains available as a witness.

mishmeret: A charge or deposit entrusted for safekeeping.

מִשְׁמֶרֶת

This is the word used for the portion set aside, giving its keeping the sense of an entrusted duty.

shomer: A keeper or watchman.

שֹׁמֵר

This branch brings out the watchful care contained in the idea of keeping.

What meets an immediate need can be preserved as a witness and resource for those who follow.

Then you shall answer them, that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off, and these stones shall be a remembrance for the children of Israel for the ages.
Joshua 4:7 · SDVStones preserve the memory of passage through the waters for generations to come.
We will not hide them from their children, recounting to the generation that follows the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonders that he has done.
Psalm 78:4 · SDVThe testimony of what sustains a people is carried forward by telling it to the next generation.
When they were filled, he said to his disciples, Gather up the broken pieces that remain, so that nothing perishes.
John 6:12 · SDVAfter the crowd is fed, the remaining provision is gathered and preserved.
As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron set it down before the Testimony, to be guarded.
Exodus 16:34 · SDV

The same Hebrew word, ⁨מִשְׁמֶרֶת⁩ (mishmeret, “a charge entrusted for safekeeping”), names the keeping in both verses. The next line locates the manna before the Testimony, showing its preservation as an entrusted witness.
