This verse in the King James

King James wording
And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.

The one whose name echoes being drawn out becomes the single point to which everyone else’s case is drawn.

One person sits in the seat of judgment while the whole people stand from morning to evening. Moses’ name carries the echo of being drawn out, yet everyone’s matters gather around him. A capable center can become a bottleneck when a whole community depends on one person’s attention.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It unsettles the belief that trustworthy judgment requires one capable person to hear every matter personally.

לִשְׁפֹּט

lishpot

GROWS FROM

שפט

to judge, decide, govern

“judge” in this verse is lishpot. The root links the act of judging with the work of ordering a community. Here that work gathers at one seat, leaving the people waiting through the day.

ALSO GROWS

mishpat: judgment, decision, justice

מִשְׁפָּט

The judgment Moses carries out belongs to the same root as the decision or order itself.

shofet: judge

שֹׁפֵט

The title names the person carrying out that work; in this scene, the role and its cases converge on Moses.

מֹשֶׁה

Mosheh

GROWS FROM

משה

to draw out

The biblical name echo ties Moses to being drawn out of the water. Here the one once drawn out becomes the center to whom the people bring their matters, while they remain standing all day.

ALSO GROWS

mashah: to draw out

מָשָׁה

This verb is echoed in the explanation of Moses’ name in Exodus 2:10.

meshitihu: I drew him out

מְשִׁיתִהוּ

This form in Exodus 2:10 makes the name’s drawing-out echo explicit.

When a community’s needs converge on one person, the strain reveals a burden that can be shared.

How can I alone carry your toil, your burden, and your dispute?
Deuteronomy 1:12 · SDVThe burden of carrying the people alone becomes explicit.
Then the twelve called the full crowd of the disciples near, and said, It is not pleasing that we should leave behind the word of God and serve tables.
Acts 6:2 · SDVThe community’s work is divided so that one responsibility does not consume the people entrusted with another.
Carry one another's weights, and so you fill up the instruction of the Anointed One.
Galatians 6:2 · SDVThe burden is carried in common rather than gathered onto one person.
And they judged the people at all times; the hard word they brought to Moses, but every small word they judged themselves.
Exodus 18:26 · SDV

The same ⁨שפט⁩ root moves from Moses judging alone to multiple judges carrying the work. The root stays the same while judgment becomes shared, with the hardest matters still brought to Moses.
