King James wording
King James Version
Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.THE KEY
The messenger carries the sender’s nature within him, so his voice brings the sender’s presence into the encounter.
THE MEANING
The messenger before you bears God’s name as nature within him, so the sender is present in the voice reaching you. Hearing is bound to response here; resistance is named as rebellion, and the messenger does not lift that rebellion away. Nearness and consequence stand together in this moment.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the idea that a name is only a label: here, the sender’s nature is present within the messenger.
THE ROOT
שְׁמַע
shema
GROWS FROM
שמע
shama
Hear, listen, heed, and respond.
The imperative is שְׁמַע (shema, hear and respond), and the adjoining שֵׁם (shem, name as nature) echoes it in its shared shin-mem opening. The verse binds hearing to the nature carried within the messenger: this is a voice whose sender is present in him.
ALSO GROWS
shama: Hear, heed, or obey.
שָׁמַע
The same root holds listening and response together, showing that hearing the voice reaches into action.
shemi'ah: Hearing or listening.
שְׁמִיעָה
This branch keeps the auditory sense in view, even where the verse renders the response as obedience.
יִשָּׂא
yissa
GROWS FROM
נשא
nasa
Lift, carry, or bear; here, carry away wrongdoing.
“will not carry” in this verse is yissa. The verb translated “pardon” is נשא (nasa, lift, carry, or bear), giving the line the image of lifting or carrying wrongdoing away. The messenger does not do so, and the verse pairs that consequence with the sender’s name held within him.
ALSO GROWS
massa: A burden or load; something carried.
מַשָּׂא
This branch makes the carrying image concrete and illuminates how wrongdoing can be borne or lifted away.
nesi'ah: A lifting or raising.
נְשִׂיאָה
It preserves the root’s physical sense of lifting beneath the verse’s relational sense of pardon.
פִּשְׁעֲכֶם
pish'ekhem
GROWS FROM
פשע
pasha
Rebel or break away; the noun names rebellion or breach.
“rebellion” in this verse is pish'ekhem. The root names a break in allegiance, putting the refusal of the voice and the transgressions in the same relational field. Alongside the name within the messenger, the warning concerns a break from the nature he carries.
ALSO GROWS
pesha: Rebellion or breach.
פֶּשַׁע
This noun names the kind of resistance the verse associates with refusing the messenger’s voice.
pasha: To rebel or break away.
פָּשַׁע
The verb shows the movement beneath the noun: transgression is a turning away from the relationship represented by the messenger.
THE PATTERN
A messenger carries the sender’s authority, so receiving or resisting that messenger reaches the sender.
And a messenger of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I brought you up out of Egypt, and brought you into the land which I swore to your fathers. And I said, I will not break my covenant with you for the ages. The one who hears you hears me, and the one who sets you aside sets me aside, and the one who sets me aside sets aside the one who sent me.Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who takes hold of whoever I send takes hold of me; and the one who takes me takes hold of the one who sent me.THE THREAD
And it shall be that whoever does not hear and respond to my words, which he speaks in my nature, I myself seek it from him.Deuteronomy uses the same root שמע (shama, hear and respond) for the response to a commissioned voice, and ties those words to the sender’s name. Its shared root makes Exodus’s “obey his voice” resonate as hearing that meets the sender’s nature within the messenger.
