King James wording
King James Version
And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.THE KEY
Moses, the one named “drawn out”, now enters the cloud and rises, showing that the way upward can pass through what hides the way.
THE MEANING
You can be moving upward while the way is hidden from view. Moses enters the cloud, ascends the mountain, and remains there through forty days and nights; concealment and movement coexist in the verse. The cloud does not erase the ascent.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that a hidden path means you have lost direction or that presence has withdrawn dissolves here: Moses’ ascent continues inside the cloud.
THE ROOT
מֹשֶׁה
Moshe
GROWS FROM
משה
To draw out.
“Moses” in this verse is Moshe. The name Moshe is linked in Exodus to the act of drawing him out of the water. Here, the one named for being drawn out enters the cloud himself, carrying that name-nature into a new hidden passage.
ALSO GROWS
mashah: To draw out.
מָשָׁה
This is the verb linked to Moses’ name in Exodus 2:10, where he is drawn out of the water.
meshitihu: I drew him out.
מְשִׁיתִהוּ
This is the verb form in the naming explanation, tying Moses’ name to a remembered act of emergence.
Moshe: Moses; the one associated with being drawn out.
מֹשֶׁה
The name connects his earlier emergence from water with his present entry into the cloud.
וַיַּעַל
vayya'al from alah
GROWS FROM
עלה
To go up, ascend, rise.
“went up” in this verse is vayya'al from alah. The verse uses the root of ascent for Moses’ movement into the mountain. Its branches preserve that upward motion, making the ascent part of the word itself rather than merely a change of location.
ALSO GROWS
aliyah: Ascent; going up.
עֲלִיָּה
This noun carries the same upward movement named in Moses’ climb.
olah: Burnt offering; that which goes up.
עֹלָה
The related noun preserves ascent as its defining image, echoing the upward direction of the verse.
THE PATTERN
The divine presence can be encountered through a covering that obscures sight without ending approach.
And the people stood far off, and Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was. Then Solomon said, The LORD said that he would pitch his tent in the thick darkness. While he was still speaking, look, a shining cloud cast its shade over them, and look, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I delight; hear him.THE THREAD
And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses, the one drawn out, and she said, Because from the waters I drew him out.Moses’ name is tied to being drawn out of the water, and here the one drawn out enters another covering, the cloud, then rises. The name’s root gives this ascent a striking turn: the drawn-out one now moves into what hides the way.
