King James wording
King James Version
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,THE KEY
The one whose name means “drawn out” is addressed before the sanctuary takes shape: what is formed begins as a received word.
THE MEANING
The LORD speaks to Moses, the one named “drawn out,” and the address comes before the instructions that shape the meeting place. The verse speaks now: what is to be made begins in a word received, before the visible work appears.
THE ROOT
וַיְדַבֵּר
waydabbēr
GROWS FROM
דבר
d-b-r
To speak or utter; the related noun also means a word or matter.
“spoke” in this verse is waydabbēr. English gives “spake” as an action, while the Hebrew root also forms davar, “word” or “matter”: speaking and what is spoken grow from one seed. Here the design begins within an address, as a word received.
ALSO GROWS
dibbēr: He spoke or uttered.
דִּבֵּר
This is the spoken action in the verse, rooted in the same letters as the noun for a word.
dāvār: Word, matter, or thing.
דָּבָר
The same root joins the act of speaking with the word or matter that takes form through speech.
מֹשֶׁה
mōšeh
GROWS FROM
משׁה
m-sh-h
To draw out or pull out, as from water.
“Moses” in this verse is mōšeh. The name holds the image of being drawn out. Here the drawn-out one is addressed, and what follows unfolds through the word he receives.
ALSO GROWS
māšāh: To draw out or pull out.
מָשָׁה
This verb supplies the name’s image of being brought out.
mōšeh: Moses; the one drawn out.
מֹשֶׁה
The name carries the drawing-out image into the verse, where Moses is the one receiving the address.
THE PATTERN
What takes form is first carried by the divine word.
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. For he says, and it comes to be; he commands, and it stands. All things came to be through him, and apart from him not one thing came to be that has come to be.THE THREAD
And God spoke all these words, saying,In Hebrew, “spake” and “words” share the root דבר: the verb is waydabbēr, and the noun is devarim. The same root joins the act of addressing with the words received.
