King James wording
King James Version
And thou shalt make unto it a border of an hand breadth round about, and thou shalt make a golden crown to the border thereof round about.THE KEY
The table’s border is not a mere limit: the same edge that contains its contents is crowned in gold.
THE MEANING
The table has a border one handbreadth wide, and a gold crown runs all around it. The edge gives the table a measured enclosure, while its gold makes that boundary part of its beauty. What holds nourishment can also be honored.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse loosens the belief that a boundary is evidence of lack: here, the edge that contains the table’s provision is itself crowned. A limit can preserve and honor what it surrounds.
THE ROOT
מִסְגֶּרֶת
misgeret
GROWS FROM
סגר
To shut, close, or enclose.
“frame” in this verse is misgeret. The border word grows from the verb for shutting or enclosing; the edge is more than a decorative rail, it closes around a space and holds it. The same root appears in Genesis 7:16 when the LORD “shut him in,” joining an enclosure around a table with one that shelters a life.
ALSO GROWS
sagar: To shut, close, or enclose.
סָגַר
This verb reveals the enclosing action within the border’s name: the edge holds the table’s surface within a defined space.
vayisgor: “And he shut him in” (Genesis 7:16).
וַיִּסְגֹּר
The same root describes the LORD enclosing Noah in the ark, showing how closure can hold and shelter what is inside.
THE PATTERN
A measured boundary can hold what nourishes and carry visible honor.
And you sheathe it in clean gold, and make for it a rim of gold round about. And it was a palm thick, and its lip was made like the lip of a cup, with blossoms of lilies. It contained two thousand baths. And the wall is built of jasper, and the city is clean gold, like clear glass.THE THREAD
And those who came in, male and female of all flesh, came as God had commanded him, and the LORD shut him in.The Hebrew border, מִסְגֶּרֶת (misgeret, “frame” or “border”), comes from סגר (sagar, “shut” or “enclose”), the same root in Genesis 7:16, where the LORD “shut him in.” One root names a frame around a table and an enclosure around a life: what closes an edge can also hold what it shelters.
