King James wording
King James Version
And thou shalt make the staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold, that the table may be borne with them.THE KEY
Even provision has handles: what nourishes the people is designed to travel with them.
THE MEANING
The table can be carried wherever the people go, so provision is not tied to one fixed place. What nourishes you can move with you through each change of place.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse loosens the belief that provision is available only when you reach a particular place.
THE ROOT
שֻׁלְחָן
shulchan
GROWS FROM
שלח
Send forth, release, extend outward.
The shared consonants connect shulchan with shalach, the root of sending and release. The table carries that motion into the scene: provision is extended outward and made mobile.
ALSO GROWS
shalach: Send forth, release, or extend the hand.
שָׁלַח
It gives the table a sense of provision sent outward with the people.
Shiloach: Sent; the name of the waters of Shiloach.
שִׁלֹחַ
Like the sent waters, the table’s provision is made to move beyond a fixed point.
וְנִשָּׂא
venissa
GROWS FROM
נשא
Lift, carry, bear.
“lifted” in this verse is venissa. The table is built to be borne, not merely displayed. This root also describes bearing a burden and lifting guilt away, joining what is carried with what can be released.
ALSO GROWS
massa: A burden; something carried.
מַשָּׂא
The table is an object borne, while the same root names what a person carries.
nasa: Forgive; lift or bear away.
נָשָׂא
The root’s sense of carrying extends to taking guilt away, linking bearing with release.
THE PATTERN
What sustains God’s people is made to travel with them and extend beyond one fixed place.
And you make the poles of shittim wood, and sheathe them in gold, that the table may be lifted with them. And the sons of the Levites lifted the ark of God upon their shoulders, with the poles upon it, as Moses commanded according to the word of the LORD.And they, holding fast day by day with one passion in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, took their food with gladness and singleness of heart.THE THREAD
Even to old age I AM, and to gray hair I will bear you. I have made, and I will lift, I will bear, and I will slip you free. The table is borne by its staves; here God says, “I will carry you,” using נשא (nasa), the same root. The image opens outward: what carries provision also names being carried through life.
