What Does Exodus 25:9 Mean?
According to all that I show you, the form of the dwelling and the form of all its vessels, so you make it.
Key words are shown with the Hebrew or Greek and what each word meant.
Selah Decoded Version The Selah Decoded Version renders what the Hebrew and Greek words meant to the people who first heard them.
King James wording
King James Version
According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.THE KEY
The sanctuary’s design arrives as something seen, so building gives material form to what is already revealed.
THE MEANING
What you make takes its form from what is first shown. The dwelling and every instrument belong to one disclosed design, so the pattern governs the whole work.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The false belief is that a meaningful dwelling must be invented from scratch; here, its form is received before it is made.
THE ROOT
תַּבְנִית
tabnith
GROWS FROM
בנה
To build, form, or establish.
Under “pattern” is the sense of a form that can be built. The word binds the shown design to the actual building: what is seen is already a form waiting to take material shape.
ALSO GROWS
bānāh: To build.
בָּנָה
The shared root links the pattern to the act of making it real.
mivneh: Structure, building.
מִבְנֶה
This branch makes the pattern concrete: it is an ordered structure, not merely an idea.
מַרְאֶה
mar’eh
GROWS FROM
ראה
To see, look at, or perceive.
“shew” in this verse is mar’eh. The design is shown before it is made. This root carries both the act of seeing and what appears to sight, so the work begins with perception as well as construction.
ALSO GROWS
rā’āh: To see or perceive.
רָאָה
The pattern enters the work through seeing.
mar’eh: Appearance, vision.
מַרְאֶה
The same root can name what is seen, joining the disclosure to the form that will be built.
מִשְׁכָּן
mishkan
GROWS FROM
שכן
To dwell or settle.
The name for the tabernacle carries the idea of dwelling. The pattern’s purpose is not form for its own sake; it shapes a place for dwelling.
ALSO GROWS
shākhan: To dwell or settle.
שָׁכַן
This is the root’s basic action and the purpose the structure serves.
shākhen: Neighbor, resident.
שָׁכֵן
A neighbor is one who dwells nearby, extending the root’s sense from dwelling to the one who inhabits a place.
THE PATTERN
Making follows a form that is first disclosed: the work takes its shape from what is shown.
All this, said David, the LORD made me see in writing by his hand upon me, even all the works of this shape. Then Jesus answered and said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything from himself, unless he sees the Father doing it. For whatever the Father does, the Son likewise does.who serve in a tracing and a shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was warned by God when he was about to finish the tent. For look, he says, "Make all things according to the impression shown to you on the mountain."THE THREAD
who serve in a tracing and a shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was warned by God when he was about to finish the tent. For look, he says, "Make all things according to the impression shown to you on the mountain."Hebrews shows the pattern reaching beyond the dwelling itself: what is made stands as an example and shadow of heavenly things. The visible form takes its shape from a reality it serves.
