This verse in the King James

King James wording
And thou shalt couple five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves, and shalt double the sixth curtain in the forefront of the tabernacle.

Here, unity does not erase structure: the dwelling is joined in two groups, and its entrance is formed by a fold in the covering.

A dwelling takes shape through ordered joining: five curtains form one group and six another, while the sixth turns double at the front. The threshold belongs to the covering’s design; the boundary is built into the dwelling itself.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Wholeness does not require every part to become indistinguishable, and an entrance does not have to sit outside the shelter it opens.

חִבַּרְתָּ

chibbarta

GROWS FROM

ח־ב־ר

ḥ-b-r

To join, connect, or associate.

“join” in this verse is chibbarta. The root behind “couple” also describes people joined in companionship and a city held together. The curtains become a dwelling through connection, while their grouping preserves distinction: joining does not make every part identical.

ALSO GROWS

ḥubberah: Joined together; compactly connected.

חֻבְּרָה

The same root describes Jerusalem as a city compact together, extending the image from connected curtains to a joined community.

chaver: Companion; associate.

חָבֵר

This branch shows that joining can describe a relationship between distinct people, as well as the fastening of separate pieces.

A dwelling becomes one through distinct parts joined into a coherent whole.

And you shall make fifty taches of gold, and join the curtains together with the taches; and it shall be one dwelling.
Exodus 26:6 · SDVJoined curtains become one tabernacle, showing how connection gives separate parts a shared form.
Jerusalem is built as a city bound together.
Psalm 122:3 · SDVThe city’s wholeness appears as parts held together, using the same Hebrew root as the joined curtains.
In whom the whole building, joined at the joints, grows into a set-apart temple in the Lord.
Ephesians 2:21 · SDVA building grows into a dwelling as its separate parts are fitted together.
Jerusalem is built as a city bound together.
Psalm 122:3 · SDV

The same root, ⁨ח־ב־ר⁩ (ḥ-b-r), joins the curtains here and describes Jerusalem as “compact together.” The dwelling’s fabric and the city’s form share one verb: wholeness emerges as distinct parts held in relation.
