King James wording
King James Version
And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God.THE KEY
God claims Israel by taking up residence in their midst.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks now as a promise of presence: God dwells among Israel and is their God. The bond is expressed as nearness and belonging, not as an idea held at a distance.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that God remains only distant: the promise is God’s own dwelling among the people.
THE ROOT
שָׁכַן
shakan
GROWS FROM
שׁכן
to settle down, reside, or make a home
“pitch my tent” in this verse is shakan. This root speaks of settling in as a resident, rather than appearing for a moment. Its branches for the tabernacle and a neighbor reveal how dwelling makes presence concrete: God is among the people as one who has made a home there.
ALSO GROWS
mishkan: dwelling place, tabernacle
מִשְׁכָּן
The tabernacle is named as a dwelling, making visible the nearness promised in “I will dwell among.”
shakhen: neighbor, resident
שָׁכֵן
A neighbor is someone who lives nearby; this branch gives the promise of God’s dwelling the language of nearness.
THE PATTERN
Covenant takes shape as God dwells among the people and calls them God’s own.
And let them make me a set-apart place, that I may pitch my tent among them. And I will set my dwelling among you, and my living soul shall not recoil from you. And I will walk among you, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And I hear a great voice from the throne, saying, Look, the tent of God is with humankind, and he will pitch his tent among them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.THE THREAD
And let them make me a set-apart place, that I may pitch my tent among them. The same Hebrew root, שׁכן (shakan, to dwell), links these verses. Exodus 25:8 names the sanctuary as a place for this nearness; Exodus 29:45 states the relationship that dwelling expresses: God among Israel, and God theirs.
