King James wording
King James Version
And thou shalt make the staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold.THE KEY
The altar is sacred and portable at once: wooden staves, covered in gold, make it possible to carry.
THE MEANING
The altar’s holiness includes its movement: its staves are built for carrying. The wood remains beneath a gold covering, holding a working frame and visible splendor together. What is set apart here is not tied to one place.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that what is sacred must remain fixed in one place: the altar is made to be carried.
THE ROOT
בַּדִּים
badim
GROWS FROM
בדד
To be apart or separate; בַּד (bad) can mean a distinct part, pole, or bar.
The poles are distinct pieces beside the altar, and the word’s connection with apartness gives them a second note: these separate extensions make the altar carryable. The possibility of movement is built into its form.
ALSO GROWS
badad: Alone, apart
בָּדָד
The sense of separation illuminates the staves as distinct members attached to the altar’s sides.
bad: A pole, bar, or separate part
בַּד
This singular form shows the stave as a distinct piece whose purpose is to bear the altar.
צִפִּיתָ
tsippita
GROWS FROM
צפה
To cover or overlay a surface.
“sheathe” in this verse is tsippita. This root describes a covering laid over something already formed. The gold does not replace the wood: the wood remains the bearer beneath the visible layer.
ALSO GROWS
tsippui: Covering, plating
צִפּוּי
This noun makes clear that the gold forms a surface over the existing wooden structure.
metsuppeh: Covered, overlaid
מְצֻפֶּה
This form describes something retaining its underlying material while receiving a covering.
THE PATTERN
What is precious can be borne through a material form built to carry it.
And you set the poles into the rings at the sides of the ark, that the ark may be lifted with them. But we hold this treasure in clay vessels, so that the overflow of strength may be of God and not from us.THE THREAD
And you set the poles into the rings at the sides of the ark, that the ark may be lifted with them. The same word, בַּדִּים (badim), names the staves of the ark and the altar. The ark verse makes explicit what Exodus 30:5 leaves implicit: these poles are the means by which a sacred object is borne.
