King James wording
King James Version
And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.THE KEY
The people ask a made thing to do exactly what the LORD already does: go before them.
THE MEANING
When the guide you can see is delayed, uncertainty can make a visible substitute feel necessary. The people remember that Moses brought them up out of Egypt, yet ask Aaron for gods they can make to go ahead of them. Their words, “we wot not what is become of him,” show how quickly not knowing becomes a demand for something controllable.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A delay means the one who led me is gone, so I must make a visible power to lead me now.
THE ROOT
הֶעֱלָנוּ
heʿĕlānû
GROWS FROM
עלה
ʿ-l-h
Rise or ascend; in this verb form, cause to rise or bring up.
הֶעֱלָנוּ (heʿĕlānû, “brought us up”) names Moses through the upward movement of their deliverance from Egypt. Their panic does not erase that memory; it redirects the need for a guide toward something they can make and expect to go ahead.
ALSO GROWS
ʿālāh: Rise, ascend, or go up.
עָלָה
The root keeps the people’s description of deliverance tied to movement upward and out.
ʿōlāh: An ascending offering; a burnt offering.
עֹלָה
This branch preserves the image of something going up, revealing the motion contained in the root.
maʿălāh: An ascent, step, or degree.
מַעֲלָה
The word extends the root’s upward movement into a step along a rising path.
יֵלְכוּ לְפָנֵינוּ
yēlĕkhû lĕp̄ānênû
GROWS FROM
הלך
hālak
Walk, go, or proceed.
“go before us” in this verse is yēlĕkhû lĕp̄ānênû. The requested gods are not merely to exist; they are to go ahead as guides. The same root describes the LORD going before the people in Exodus 13:21, so the request preserves the role while replacing its source.
ALSO GROWS
hālak: To walk or go.
הָלַךְ
This is the verb’s basic movement, which the people now demand from their made gods.
hōlēkh: One who walks or goes.
הוֹלֵךְ
The participle names the one moving ahead, bringing the question of who leads into focus.
mahalakh: A course or progression.
מַהֲלָךְ
This branch carries the root’s movement into the path being traveled.
THE PATTERN
When the unseen source of guidance and deliverance feels absent, people seek a visible substitute to take its place.
And they said to him, Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now set over us a king to judge us like all the nations. And the remainder of it he makes into a god, his hewn image, and falls down to it, and bows down, and prays to it, and says, "Snatch me, for you are my god."And they exchanged the weight of the imperishable God for an image shaped like perishable humankind, and of winged ones, four-footed ones, and crawling things.THE THREAD
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to shine for them; to go by day and night. The request to “go before us” uses the root הלך (hālak, “walk” or “go”), also used when the LORD goes before the people here. The role they ask Aaron to supply is already present; the change is that they want a thing they can have made for them.
