King James wording
King James Version
And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.THE KEY
An ornament changes meaning when it moves from the ear to the hands that will reshape it.
THE MEANING
Something you value can move from your own keeping into a shared act, where its next meaning is shaped by the one who receives it. The transfer stands exposed before its outcome: the ornament is removed, but its use is still in another’s hands.
THE ROOT
פָּרְקוּ
pārəqû
GROWS FROM
פרק
To tear off, strip away, or tear free.
“Break off” in this verse is pārəqû. The root can describe stripping something away and, elsewhere, tearing people free from an enemy. Here it names the earrings’ removal, while the next verse shows who shapes what has been removed.
ALSO GROWS
pāraq: To tear off or strip away.
פָּרַק
This is the root verb behind Aaron’s command: the ornaments leave their wearers’ ears.
wayipreqēnû: He delivered us; literally, he tore us away.
וַיִּפְרְקֵנוּ
Psalm 136:24 uses this same root for deliverance from enemies, showing how the root’s sense of tearing away can also describe rescue.
THE PATTERN
What a community gathers from its members can become the visible center that gathers their allegiance.
And he took them from their hands, and shaped it with a cutting tool, and made it into a poured calf. And they said, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. And Gideon made an ephod of it, and set it up in his city, even in Ophrah, and all Israel went there whoring after it. And this became a snare to Gideon and to his house. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.THE THREAD
And tears us loose from those who press us, for his faithful love reaches to the ages. The Hebrew verb translated “hath redeemed” comes from פרק, the same root as “break off” in Aaron’s command. The shared root holds both stripping something away and tearing people free from enemies.
