This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD’s side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.

At the camp’s gate, allegiance stops being a private answer and becomes a gathering.

The question makes allegiance visible: those who are for the LORD come to Moses, and the Levites gather to him. The verse speaks now as a scene of loyalty taking form in movement, proximity, and shared company.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the idea that allegiance is only an inward conviction: here, it becomes visible in whom people move toward and join.

וַיֵּאָסְפוּ

wayyēʾāsəfū

GROWS FROM

אָסַף

ʾāsaf

to gather, collect, bring together

“gathered” in this verse is wayyēʾāsəfū. The root carries the act of collecting people into one company. The Levites’ movement answers the call visibly: they gather around a shared center.

ALSO GROWS

ʾosēf: one who gathers; gathering

אֹסֵף

This active form makes the gathering a deliberate act, echoing the Levites’ response to the call.

neʾĕsaf: was gathered; was taken in

נֶאֱסַף

This form shows the other side of the root: a person can be gathered into a larger whole.

מֹשֶׁה

mōšeh

GROWS FROM

מָשָׁה

māšâ

to draw out

The name Moses is linked in Exodus 2:10 to being drawn out of the water. Here, the one whose name carries that image stands at the camp’s gate and calls others toward him.

ALSO GROWS

māšâ: to draw out

מָשָׁה

This verb gives the name its biblical wordplay and brings the image of being drawn from danger into view.

məšîtihū: I drew him out

מְשִׁיתִהוּ

This is the wordplay in Exodus 2:10 that connects Moses’ name with being drawn out.

Allegiance becomes visible as people choose a center and gather around it.

And Elijah came to all the people, and said, How long will you limp on two branches? If the LORD is God, walk after him, but if Baal, then walk after him. And the people answered him not a word.
1 Kings 18:21 · SDVThe call to choose whom to follow makes divided allegiance explicit.
Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
Matthew 12:30 · SDVBeing with Jesus is expressed through gathering, while separation is expressed through scattering.
And the multitude of those who trusted were of one heart and one living soul. Not one of them said that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared all things in common.
Acts 4:32 · SDVA shared center takes visible form in a community joined in heart and possessions.
Gather to me my faithful ones, those who cut my covenant over the slaughtered offering.
Psalm 50:5 · SDV

The Hebrew word translated “gather” shares the root ⁨אָסַף⁩ (ʾāsaf) with the Levites’ gathering here. Both verses join gathering “unto me” with allegiance made visible in a shared relationship.
