This verse in the King James

King James wording
And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.

The verb for “brake off” is also used for breaking a yoke and being delivered from enemies, showing that release takes its meaning from where it leads.

You can relinquish something precious and still deepen bondage when it is handed to a false center. Release alone does not make you free; where it is directed matters.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that surrender itself guarantees freedom: what you give up can become the material for a new bondage.

וַיִּתְפָּרְקוּ

wayyitpārəqû

GROWS FROM

פָּרַק

pāraq

to tear off, strip away, or break loose

“broke off” in this verse is wayyitpārəqû. The Hebrew verb connects pulling the earrings away with release elsewhere in scripture: the same root can describe breaking a yoke or being delivered from enemies. The act of letting go does not determine whether it brings freedom; its direction does.

ALSO GROWS

ûpāraqta ʿullô: Break a yoke from the neck

וּפָרַקְתָּ עֻלּוֹ

Genesis 27:40 uses the same root for breaking a yoke, revealing the force of release carried in the people’s action here.

wayyiprəqēnû: Tear away or deliver from enemies

וַיִּפְרְקֵנוּ

Psalm 136:24 uses the root for deliverance from enemies, showing that what is torn away can lead toward freedom, or, in this verse, be given over to a new center.

What people release reveals the center they are building, because the same costly things can be directed toward very different ends.

And they came, both men and women, as many as were free-hearted, and brought bracelets, and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels of gold, and every man who made a waving of gold to the LORD.
Exodus 35:22 · SDVThe same earrings and gold are brought toward another center, showing that what is relinquished takes its meaning from where it is directed.
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Matthew 6:21 · SDVThe treasure you release reveals where your heart is gathered.
And tears us loose from those who press us, for his faithful love reaches to the ages.
Psalm 136:24 · SDV

Exodus uses the root ⁨פָּרַק⁩ (pāraq), meaning to tear away or deliver, for the people pulling gold from their ears; Psalm 136:24 uses it for being delivered from enemies. The shared root shows how release can open toward freedom or be handed over to a new bondage.
