King James wording
King James Version
And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the LORD talked with Moses.THE KEY
The cloud takes its stand at the opening of the tent, and that threshold becomes the place where the LORD speaks with Moses.
THE MEANING
You are brought to the threshold with Moses: the cloud comes down, stops at the entrance, and the LORD speaks with him. The verse holds divine nearness as both overwhelming presence and direct conversation. Here the opening is where presence and speech meet.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that divine nearness can only be distant spectacle: the cloud reaches the doorway, and the LORD speaks with Moses.
THE ROOT
פֶּתַח
petach entrance or
GROWS FROM
פתח
p-t-ḥ
To open.
The word translated “door” means an entrance or opening and comes from the verb “to open.” The cloud stands at that opening, making the threshold the precise place where the LORD’s speech meets Moses.
ALSO GROWS
patach: to open
פָּתַח
The verb behind “door” gives the entrance its sense as an opening.
petach: entrance, opening
פֶּתַח
This is the word in the verse: the cloud stations itself at the opening.
pittuach: engraving, carved work
פִּתּוּחַ
The same root can describe an opening made visible through carved work, extending the image of what is opened or made accessible.
דִּבֶּר
dibber spoke
GROWS FROM
דבר
d-b-r
To speak; as a noun, a word or matter.
“spoke with” in this verse is dibber spoke. The same root holds speaking together with davar, a word or matter. The LORD’s speech is not merely sound in the scene; the root connects the utterance with the matter being communicated.
ALSO GROWS
davar: word, matter, thing
דָּבָר
The same root links the LORD’s speaking with the word or matter spoken.
devarim: words, matters
דְּבָרִים
The plural form carries that same connection between spoken words and what they concern.
מֹשֶׁה
Mosheh
GROWS FROM
משה
m-sh-h
To draw out; Exodus 2:10 links Moses’ name to this verb.
Exodus 2:10 connects Moses’ name with being drawn out of the water. Here that name enters the tent as the cloud descends to its opening: the verse places the one whose name recalls being drawn out at a threshold of encounter.
ALSO GROWS
mashah: to draw out
מָשָׁה
This is the verb linked to Moses’ name in Exodus 2:10.
meshitihu: I drew him out
מְשִׁיתִהוּ
Pharaoh’s daughter uses this form in Exodus 2:10 to explain the name Moses.
THE PATTERN
When the cloud marks God’s nearness, it becomes the place from which speech comes.
And the weight of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days, and on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. He speaks to them in the pillar of cloud; they guard his testimonies and the statutes he gives them. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son. Hear and respond to him.THE THREAD
He speaks to them in the pillar of cloud; they guard his testimonies and the statutes he gives them.Psalm 99:7 repeats the image of speech in the cloudy pillar, connecting the LORD’s speaking here with the same root, דבר (d-b-r), “to speak.” It shows that the cloud is not only a sign at the tent’s entrance; it is also where the voice is heard.
