This verse in the King James

King James wording
And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.

The encounter is already visible on Moses before he can perceive its effect in himself.

Moses comes down carrying a change he has not registered in himself. While he speaks with God, his face makes the encounter visible; awareness follows the radiance rather than producing it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that a change is real only when you can feel it or name it: Moses does not know his face shines, yet the radiance is already there.

קָרַן

qāran

GROWS FROM

קרן

Q-R-N

To project or send out a ray; to shine.

“sent out horns” in this verse is qāran. The verb translated “shone” belongs to the same root as the Hebrew word for “horn,” a shape that projects outward. The radiance is pictured as something extending from Moses, joining light to the image of a visible projection.

ALSO GROWS

qeren: Horn; also a projecting ray or beam.

קֶרֶן

This branch links Moses’ shining face to something that extends outward from a surface.

qarnayim: Horns; the dual form of qeren, rendered “horns” in Habakkuk 3:4.

קַרְנַיִם

Habakkuk uses the same root for what comes out from God’s hand, joining the English words “shone” and “horns” beneath one image of radiance projecting outward.

לֹא־יָדַע

lo-yada did not

GROWS FROM

ידע

Y-D-ʿ

To know, recognize, or perceive.

“did not perceive” in this verse is lo-yada did not. The verse describes a gap between what has changed and what Moses perceives about himself. The radiance does not depend on his awareness of it; the encounter is visible before he recognizes its effect.

ALSO GROWS

daʿat: Knowledge or awareness.

דַּעַת

This noun makes the verse’s lack of self-perception a question of awareness, not a lack of transformation.

maddaʿ: Knowledge or learning.

מַדָּע

This branch shows the wider family of knowing behind “wist not,” while the verse gives that knowing a sharply personal focus: Moses does not perceive his own radiance.

מֹשֶׁה

Moshe drawn out

GROWS FROM

משה

M-Sh-H

To draw out, as from water.

“Moses” in this verse is Moshe drawn out. The name Moshe carries the movement of being drawn out of water. Here the one drawn out carries an encounter outward in visible radiance: what happens in speaking with God appears on the surface of his body.

ALSO GROWS

māšâ: To draw out or pull out.

מָשָׁה

The root’s movement of drawing out echoes the radiance extending outward from Moses’ face.

meshîtihû: “I drew him out,” the phrase behind Moses’ name in Exodus 2:10.

מְשִׁיתִהוּ

The name’s origin holds a movement from water into life; this verse shows Moses carrying what he has received outward as visible light.

Encountering God changes the person who beholds him in ways that can become visible.

They gaze upon him and flow with light, and their faces are never exposed.
Psalm 34:5 · SDVTurning toward God is pictured as bringing light to the faces of those who look.
And his shape was changed before them, and his face blazed as the sun, and his garments became white as the light.
Matthew 17:2 · SDVJesus’ face and clothing visibly shine as he is transfigured before his companions.
But we all, with uncovered faces, mirror the weight of the LORD, and are being reshaped into the same image, ever increasing in weight, even as from the breath of the LORD.
2 Corinthians 3:18 · SDVBeholding the Lord brings a change into the beholder, from one likeness to another.
And his glow was as the light. Horns rose from his hand, and there his strength lay hidden.
Habakkuk 3:4 · SDV

The Hebrew verb for Moses’ face “shone” and the word rendered “horns” share the root ⁨קרן⁩ (Q-R-N). The root lets radiance and projection meet: what shines is pictured as extending outward.
